Christian Side Hug?

Postby Alevuss » Sun Jan 02, 2011 2:00 pm

So, I was looking around on Youtube, when I came across this video which eventually led to me reading this.

In case you were unable to infer from the video, it is basically a rap discouraging hugging a person from the front, and encouraging doing so from the side out of a belief that it may be a sin, as it could create a sexual attraction to the person, especially if they are of the opposite sex.

Personally, I find it rather ridiculous that this is being done over a hug, something we have done for I do not even know how long. I think people could certainly put their attention into things other than the morality of a hug, however, if someone feels that they must do a Christian Side Hug to me or are uncomfortable with me giving them a frontal hug, then I'm fine with that.

But my question is more than that. How do you feel about this? What do you think of the Christian Side Hug? And more importantly, what has become of our society? Are people today far to easily offended or sensitive to things that were seen as commonplace or "no big deal" 10-15 years ago?

NOTE: Just in case you're wondering, I am aware that this video is just about a year old.

This seems ridiculous even for christians. Is this non-denomination protestant?
And a better title would be 'Christian Side Boob', as that is what the males would be hugging.

Yep. I get crap about this all the time. It's pretty stupid.

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Then again, now that I reflect on it, my mom would looooove it if I started doing that to my friends. I tend to make friends with boys waaaay more than girls, and she hates that we hug and stuff (nothing sexual is meant by "and stuff"). Like, we had to have a talk about my best friend being a 14 year old guy. When I wanted to invite him somewhere with us, we had to discuss how I couldn't date him (which I didn't want to and would be gross anyway) and stuff like that. It was like "yes Mom, I decided to have our first date be with us two and you and my little brother."

But seriously, the Catholics I know are the most touchy feely people I know. When I go to church, I get freaking molested by people I hardly know thinking that they have to hug me. :?

EDIT: It was pointed out to me that knowing my age is relevant. I'm 17. As it works out, he's a freshman and I'm a senior.

1. LOLWUT
2. I don't give a shit, frankly. It's silly people being silly at best. Do it if you want, but don't be surprised if your side-hug is met by my frontal hug. Ambush'd.
3. Nein. There will always be conservative extremists, and even though societies swing between 'hard-core moralist' and 'ultra-independent immorality', cultures tend to slowly march towards progressivism in the end.

Regardless of what a couple of posts in this thread imply, "Christian" does not automatically equate with "weird evangelical fundamentalists who think all hugs are potentially sexual, so let's only hug from the side" any more than it equals "Ethiopian Orthodox". Both of the latter are subsets of the former, with side-huggers probably a very small subset. In fact, I'm willing to bet you there are more Ethiopian Orthodox worldwide than there are evangelical side-huggers, but that doesn't mean anyone's posting in NSG to claim that all Christians are keeping the Jewish Sabbath, refraining from eating pork, and only ever reciting the liturgy in Ge'ez.

Or let's put it another way, I'm sure we could come up with individual examples of NSG atheists who believe in homeopathy if we tried hard enough, but that wouldn't lead us to therefore conclude that all atheists are wacky nutjobs who believe in homeopathy.

Summing up, these side huggers are wacky nutjobs, and sound like the sort of people who would probably be wacky nutjobs regardless of their religious beliefs - or indeed lack thereof - even if in this case the specific example of wackiness is founded on their fringe interpretation of their religion.

Drawing the line for sinful hugs and righteous hugs is a stupid thing to get in an argument about or throw a fit over, but I'd have to say hug intention would be important. If you're hugging to show comfort, consolation, or love, good for you. If you're hugging to feel someone up, you're a dirty perv (by Jesus standards).

You know, I generally have a cynical disposition towards people but... and admittedly I haven't read around this much... I'm pretty sure these rappers are being this thing called humorous, the lyrics and general tone is pretty satirical to me.

Hey there is nothing wrong with giving the opposite sex a hug. Those breasts pressed against your chest, your penis laying against her, her hands on your ass. Yeah nothing erotic or inappropriate about that.

The side hug is just a glorified reach-around, anyway.
