Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants, was the little-known chancellor of a farming university when elected to office in 1990. He quickly established himself as a cunning politician whose hands-on style produced results even as he angered critics for concentrating power.

Under his watch, the feared leader of the Maoist Shining Path, Abimael Guzman, was captured - dealing a crucial blow to a movement that in the 1980s seemed close to toppling the Peruvian state. Guzman died in prison in September 2021.

He slayed hyperinflation that had thrown millions of Peruvians out of work, privatized dozens of state-run companies and slashed trade tariffs, setting the foundations for Peru to become, for a while, one of Latin America's most stable economies.

Mayoral elections are taking place all over Brazil in three weeks, including in Rio de Janeiro and in Sao Paulo. Rio's vote isn't even close with popular Mayor Eduardo Paes easily expected to coast, but Sao Paulo's quite a bit closer. The top polling candidate right now is the ultra-conservative and controversial internet firebrand Pablo Marçal of the equally ultra-right PRTB(Brazilian Labour Renewal Party). On Sunday, there was a debate among the top six mayoral candidates, in which Marçal was beaten with a chair by fellow contender and Rede Bandeirantes newscaster Datena(PDT, Democratic Labour Party).

Datena admitted that he lost his head after Marçal brought up earlier sexual assault allegations against Datena(allegations that later proved to be false after the accuser retracted her story and admitted so), which Datena said caused so much stress that his MIL died as a result at the time.

For the record, Marçal is not expected to win the Runoff in Late October, that'll go to Socialism and Liberty Party(PSOL) candidate and current Federal Deputy Guilherme Boulos.

Ok, this is a post I wrote a month and left in my drafts, but here’s some Central American international legal drama right now.

Basically, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration is suing former CABEI president Dante Mossi Reyes on racketeering charges in DC because Central American courts are completely non-functional. Some background: Mossi allegedly took office through a corrupt deal with Daniel Ortega and ex-Honduran president/convicted drug trafficker Juan Hernández Orlando and financed the Nicaraguan government extensively, including National Police. Naturally, Ortega has condemned the lawsuit, and Mossi sued CABEI for defamation in the Central American Court of Justice, located in Nicaragua.

In another story somewhat related to the first, the Honduran government is still owned by drug traffickers. President Xiomara Castro has ended Honduras’ extradition treaty with the United States after evidence emerged of her brother-in-law taking bribes from high-profile Honduran gangsters, weeks after the US ambassador criticized a Honduran general for meeting with Venezuelan drug trafficker and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino. Castro blamed this on a vast Yankee conspiracy or something and said it was a necessary step to prevent a coup.
