The alternatives were pretty terrible to tell the truth. Allende for instance had lost control of the legislature and the judiciary, and was more or less ignoring their attempts to moderate him as left-wing guerrillas murdered people in the countryside. It's not surprising that many people would accept a dictatorship to restore order, especially with the specter of a bloodier communist dictatorship leering its head in the popular imagination.
