My sister says they don't like black people, and after hearing of this incident I wonder if I'll encounter mistreatment and misidentification as a [ethnic slur against da darkies]; it doesn't seem like it'll be too bad.
The only latent racism I've personally encountered in my memory is people mistaking me for other black people in my high school. Though that's really just homogenizing the outgroups.

Australian culture has some facets I find wonderful. But although we're remarkably warm and egalitarian within our group, and on an individual basis, we treat to meet almost everyone with a great degree of respect and hospitality. But like a lot of peoples, we still bear deep suspicion and enmity towards "outsiders". Let's not kid ourselves about that.

Yeah, we're Aussies. We drink beer, watch football, and eat meat pies. Fit in or Fuck off. But we're not racist. I went to Japan once, and this one guy called me a gaijin once. Do you see me getting all offended and shit? I mean, that one experience where I experienced minor ethnocentrism clearly enables me to grasp the emotionally draining experience of exposure to casual racism day in day out. That doesn't explain why not one but several units of police were present when the removal was being carried out. There's still a lot that we aren't being told by either side.

The onus is on the police, when challenged, to establish that their use of force was proportionate to the situation.

Sadly, not the case. 70% of Australians support the Abbott Government's asylum-seeker policies (which amount to, "Not noway, nohow, will you get anything but a short-term visa here! Oh, and go wait on that third-world hellhole for 2-5 years while we process that, kthxbai.") A majority want it to be made even worse. And almost all Australians are under the delusion that our refugee intake is (a) high, and/or (b) in some way a threat to our way of life.

Yes. There are. And throwing money at the problems won't make them go away - the government actually needs to put some thought into indigenous Australian policymaking, not electioneering slogans and cash.

First step: Work with and through the indigenous social structures, rather than handing down edicts from above.

The police are the ones that need to explain why they removed the children, and why they did so in such a violent manner. The longer they remain silent, the more likely that this will become another example of police injustice.
