Because we understand that consciousness and thought come from the brain and that we didn't exist before we were born, and therefore death is just a return to the state of nothingness.

Personally I believe our consciousness becomes part of the universe. I haven't come to any conclusion regarding a specific afterlife (Elysium, Tartarus, Asgard, Valhalla, etc). But so far I can say that I believe that we just become one with the universe. Whether or not we retain all of our personality, I have not decided, but I do believe that our consciousness survives.

Quoting from memory, though, so obviously not exact. And the bit about the Man may be a differen scene. But something like it came right after. Just read "The Gods of Pegana" by Lord Dunsany.

How does that make any sense? Consciousness is routed in the brain, and your brain doesn't work so well when you're dead.

People who are depressed probably just want love and understanding, which they never get, so maybe they get it in the afterlife
