You should have told this to the estimated two millions of women and men, burnt over the centuries in Europe (and elsewhere). They would have been very glad to hear this - or at least you might convince the pope, that there were more than "maybe some mistakes, but basically nothing to regret". Not to talk about all the others burnt at the stake by catholics for heresy, not being faithful enough or else...
