Your opinion of Baptists

Postby Nordengrund » Fri Jul 27, 2012 7:26 am

I have officially become a Baptist just yesterday and I think it is the denomination just right for me because they match all of my beliefs. This thread is mainly aimed at other Christians- Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox alike- but believers of other faiths and Atheists/Agnostics are also welcome to reply.

What is your opinion of the Baptists?

I can't say I have much of one, knowing neither anything about that sect of Christianity nor any Baptists personally. I guess they probably like Jesus.

You know how we Christians tend to always try to convert people like you? Well the Baptists are the ones who are the least concerned about converting people and practically keep to themselves, yet their are one of the Christian groups who are persecuted the most. Perhaps it is because of our interference in politics.

How are Baptists persecuted? "Persecution" has a specific meaning, you know, and I don't believe it includes "other people disagreeing with you."

Keeping to yourself sounds like something that would preclude interfering in politics.

I just read it somewhere online, though I am not sure if they were persecuted as in beaten or killed, or persecuted as in people disagreed with us.

All I know is that they got on the bad side of both Protestants and Catholics.

I don't know anything about baptist beliefs, nor have I ever personally met a baptist. I suppose they're big into the whole 'Jesus' thing. Maybe having a fondness for baptism?

Baptists most certainly DO try practice conversion techiques. When my sister was "born again" and belonged to a baptist church, she was always sending her kids out "soul winning" which involded banging on people's doors a la the Mormons.

The Catholic Church=/=Jehova Witnesses. We don't really try to convert people anymore (however, the Church does try to negotiate with Orthodox Patriarchs and Anglican Bishops in order to bring them back to the Church).

Petsecution (pûr s -ky sh n).

"Persecution is the systematic mistreatment of an individual or group by another group. The most common forms are religious persecution, ethnic persecution, and political persecution, though there is naturally some overlap between these terms. The inflicting of suffering, harassment, isolation, imprisonment, fear, or pain are all factors that may establish persecution. Even so, not all suffering will necessarily establish persecution. The suffering experienced by the victim must be sufficiently severe."

From this I conclude that in the Western World, Baptists are FAR from being persecuted.

My perception is that most of what I consider the worst aspects of US Christianity are associated with the Baptists.

Based on the ones I've actually interacted with in my lifetime, both here and in real life, quite negative. There was one that sent a bus around when I was a much younger kid (younger than 10), so I wound up going to it a couple of times. The Sunday School teachers were incredibly rude and would eat in front of us kids without offering us anything. Then there's the whole trying to restrict people like me to second- or third-class citizenship (though they're hardly alone in that).

In my assessment of the protestant spectrum, Baptists were more crazy than the Lutherans, Methodists, and Presbyterians, but less crazy than Pentecostals.

Baptists themselves can be different depending on sects, are you a "let's sing 20 songs about Jesus" Baptist or a "women who wear denim jeans will go to hell" Baptist?
