Well, there were dozens of other bands playing metal/punk crossover at the time, thrash metal was just one of the flavours of that type of crossover. Metallica and Megadeth helped invent that one flavour, but without them we'd just be talking about Exodus or Sodom or Slayer or DRI.
Can we just agree that all bands are awesome..... and Dave Mustaine knows nothing about politics?
Continuing from this growing hijack...
Many people try to argue that Metallica are the most important metal band of the 80s, or that thrash metal couldn't have happened without them or similar.
Now, first I few things I won't try to argue... Metallica was likely the first thrash metal band. Metallica was one of the more important bands of the style. Metallica have many good songs.
That said, thrash metal grew out of an overall trend that started around 1978 of punk and metal elements being combined. Without Metallica, countless others would have still decided to ripoff Discharge, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Venom, The Exploited, Motorhead ect. With or without Metallica, thrash metal was pretty much guaranteed to happen; when people try to argue they're responsible for the whole genre, they are deeply mistaken. Metallica fanboys making these claims cause the band to be over-rated.
Discuss. Flame. Talk about Celtic Frost instead.
