Relativity: The Special and the General Theory, by Albert Einstein; I've never been a STEM whiz, and the only reason I'm reading this is for my college class.

Chartreuse is my favorite color.

Finally got around to reading a Max Barry book - though I’d read the initial excerpts of Machine Man when he was publicly posting the first few chapters - but just finished Lexicon, which is genuinely superb.

Hat tip.

Ibram X. Kendi, Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. Don't be put off by the thickness, it's a rollicking history a la Barbara Tuchman with short, easily digested chapters. Some gleanings so far:

A racist idea is any idea that individuals of any race are better or worse than those of another race in any area of achievement simply because of their race.

It is not the case that hate, ignorance and fear give rise to racist ideas that result in racist policies. Rather, racist policies are justified by racist ideas that give rise to hate, ignorance and fear. It's not necessary therefore to change human hearts in order to eradicate racism; all that is needed is to eradicate racist policies.

Some enslavers objected to Christianizing the people they enslaved because they felt if they did they would have to meet them in Christian Heaven. Wrap your mind around that one.

During a smallpox outbreak in Boston in the early 18th Century Cotton Mather learned from a man he enslaved that he had been inoculated against the virulent disease while in Africa by having matter from a smallpox pustule scratched into his skin with a plant thorn. Mather advocated the same treatment but was opposed by physicians who claimed the lying Blacks were simply trying to infect their enslavers. Some things never change do they.

"...the Republican strategy of disenfranchisement is a state-by-state strategy. It looks like judicial rule where they cannot win. Where they cannot win by judicial rule, they will rule by procedural theft. Where they cannot convince voters to vote for them, they will convince the candidate they voted for to become one of them." - Tressie McMillan Cottom | "...now you have someone sitting on top of the personal data of several billion users, someone who has a long track record of vindictive harassment, someone who has the ear of the far right, and someone who has just shown us his willingness to weaponize internal company data to score political points. That scares me a lot." -- Marcus Hutchins*

Rereading it, finished it a few days ago. Great book. This and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee are two books I think every American should read.

Both Awareik Fairgunein and Hawi Marthal were convicted of second-degree murder. The public has a mixed response, with some agreeing with the sentencing and others believing the killing was justified. Presiding judge Aiktriu K.
