I am listening to the audiobook version of So Close to Being the Sh*t, Y’all Don’t Even Know by Retta. As with all celebrity memoirs, the only way to properly experience it is through the author’s own voice reading it to you, and Retta is in that sacred pantheon of actresses whose voices I could listen to forever, among the likes of Kathryn Hahn and the delicious Christiane Amanpour. Retta leverages her comedic sensibilities to their fullest here, with her stand-up experience of using long stories coming full circle into an entertaining and generally pleasant read. She is incredibly personal and personable and is an utter delight all around.

Her connection to the former President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was completely unexpected but perhaps my favourite part of the entire book.

Capitalist Realism: Is there no alternative? by Mark Fisher.
An Oligarchic state where the ultra-rich govern a nation of entrepreneurs and innovators. Just as corrupt, hedonistic and materialistic as you think, despite its progressive policies and emphasis on quality of life.

"The death and life of great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs.

Oh, and I forgot to mention:
Mira Grant: "Chimera", it is part 3 of the "parasite" serie.
Seanan McGuire: "Tricks for Free", "that ain't witchcraft" and "Imaginary numbers"
Charles Stross: "the Labyrinth Index"
Diana Rowland:"How the white trash zombie got her groove back"
Marie Brennan: "the Labyrinth of drakes", "within the sanctuary of wings", "turning darkness into light"
Because Yay! Birthday, thus new books in my book collection.

And after Jane Jacobs I'll read:
Matthew de Abaitua: "If/Then"
Natasha Pulley: "The bedlam Stacks"

Its brilliant. Very sad to see it still is relevant. We keep making the same mistakes again and again without ever wondering why. The blight that is "car centredness" is atrocious.
In 1960 it already was known that for every percentage of extra concrete, there will be an percentage of extra traffic.

Because people have a "optimum" travel time. So now we have cars we are able to live further away from our workplace, thus contributing to extra traffic. And most traffic is residential traffic, short distances which could have been made by other means of mobility. IF there is a safe alternative available.

More eyes on the street, more functions on the street, makes an area safer and more attractive, thus creating more eyes on the street.
If one doesn't feel safe to walk on the street, one will drive a car or avoid that patch of street, thus making it less safe.
All this knowledge, known in 1960s, still ignored today.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. It was the first book that I completely fell in love with in college I wrote an essay about it. I found service for book report help and with their help I got the highest score in the class. I still use their help from time to time.
