I'm reading East of Eden for school. I'm surprisingly enjoying it, and I don't know if it's placebo, but I do feel more lively when it comes to writing now, unlike when I was trying to get through Heart of Darkness, which makes me sad. Thought I liked the latter more, but guess not—

Spain Betrayed: the Soviet Union in the Spanish Civil War and Preston's The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge are both pretty solid reads in that line that I'd really recommend, particularly the first.

I'm reading Bolano's 2666 and Zizek's Sublime Object of Pure Ideology atm.

The Witchwood Crown by Tad Williams. I'm enjoying it. It feels similar to GoT with the large cast of characters but with more fantasy and less sex.

Rereading John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, something I hadn't read since my ninth grade school year. It was easy to take for granted his skill with scenic description since I hadn't read much then and just dismiss him as a square high-school lit author, but it's refreshing now that there's no letter-grades or deadlines attached to his book. I been to Salinas and Monterrey since I first read the book; course it's a lot drier now, but it helps keep your interest when you have a personal experience with the scenery. I think I'll read more of Steinbeck's books.

The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, and Win by Maria Konnikova. An account of her time playing the game I love in order to try and draw some conclusions about the role of chance in human life. Lots of fun vignettes into the life of the rounder and the characters of some of the top players today with valuable insights into the part personality plays.

Recommend Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row. Steinbeck is one of the most sympathetic authors I've had the pleasure of reading, whether he's relating the mystical experience of a man and his dogs in the piny woods or the rutting of two social outcasts like pigs in the muddy street. The profound tragedy of a pair like George and Lenny, trapped in a merciless world they never made, or a boy and a doomed red pony only heightens the contrasts. The Winter of Our Discontent may be his masterpiece.

Thanks! I'll surely put Cannery Row on the to-read list then. Someone irl had also recommended it profusely when we were out in Monterrey. Discontent seems really interesting too.
