'Nation' by Terry Pratchett.

For like the 1000000th time. Is my favourite book right now. (These readings are over a period of years tho, I am still sane.)

It's an old one, but I've been reading Library of the World's Best Literature. Though I was lucky enough to find a hard copy of the complete set, which is how I found it in the first place.

It's not much world-wide literature, being mostly American and European, most likely a fault of it's time (1896). But I don't know for sure, as I'm only half way through the first volume, so maybe I just haven't got to the rest of the world (Actually, now that I think about it, it did have some Assyrian-Babylonian Literature). An interesting thing about this collection is that it's not ordered by subject, genre, or chronology, but alphabetically. It also has a short essay on the Author, though to be honest, I'm not sure how trustworthy the essays are, but I don't know enough history to question the content of the essays. the only reason I'm questioning them at all, is that the Assyrian-Babylonian collection's essay tried to force in a weird juxtaposition with the Biblical accounts of Creation and the Great Flood, where the Author of the essay got several things wrong about both versions in order to make them seem more similar than they actually are. However, the content itself is all there and untouched (well, translated of course, but you get the point) to compare for yourself, so no lasting harm done.

I didn't care much for NotW, though I concede Rothfuss might be doing something really clever with unreliable narration. Not that anyone will ever know, because he and George RR Martin have a pact: first one to finish a series has to commit seppuku.

I really liked it, but I read it and its sequel in a pretty short period of time (I usually post every book I read here but I forgot to post tWMF so idk exactly how short, but within the space of a week, I believe), and, while I didn't exactly dislike it, and would probably have immediately moved onto the next book if I could, the whole DnD format got a little tiresome and predictable (which isn't to say that the plot was predictable, just they way in which events would resolve themselves)...

Oh and I'm reading Teju Cole's Open City. The next expedition on my psycho-geographic binge.

Are you referring to the first or second book when you reference it having D&D like resolutions? Because, while I can't comment on the accuracy of such commentary if it's in regards to the second book since I've never read it, I can certainly say that's not the case for the first.

Kvothe's reaction to his troupes slaughter and his parents death is probably the the most realistically portrayed and heart-wrenching depiction of a child dealing with death that I've ever read. His toils in Tarbean are similarly some of the mosty gritty, well paced and engaging depiction of struggle and survival I've seen in fantasy or any other genre for that mater.

I'm gonna have to look up the plot, because I read the second one so soon after that I forget what takes place in which book, but essentially, I mean that there's this kind of repeated thing, where Kvothe goes to a place, has some sort of adventure, and at the end of it learns some new skill (and learns it better and faster than anyone else), and in all subsequent ventures, his new skill/item/connection/whatever will come into play,
and he learns some new skill, and gets some new item (levels up and gets loot, moves onto another module).
I mean thats not to say the thing is badly written - I really enjoyed it - and I'll definitely agree that it is very emotional at parts, but it did feel very DnD. Looking back, I think it did feel more DnD as things progressed, but even in the beginning there was some element of it.

I'll give you that tbh. I feel like they managed to temper that aspect pretty well during the academy section if not outright subvert it given all the obstacles set in his path and his progress not being notably above even some of his peers ( he was charged 6 jots in his second semester while IIRC one of his friends got charged 5 when he first arrived ) because of those obstacles. While the skills he learned during the scenes I mentioned were used later, I think that's pretty excusable given they were necessary things for him to learn if he was going to survive or cope with the situations he found himself in at the time.

I've been reading a translated copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls known as The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation. Also, with just "the Dead Sea Scrolls," should it be italicized/underlined, or quoted?

Used to love those as a kid. Really liked his Dreamcycle stuff too, but as I grew up I think I grew to prefer the Mythos stuff. Haven't read much of it in a while though.

Just so I have something to put here:
I've been reading alot of short stories from the online, mostly from the New York Times and whatever is online for some local literary journals like The Stinging Fly. Heading to the library tomorrow to get an actual book.

I would recommend reading it, it's actually pretty good

In reality, I'm reading Don't know much about the Civil War by Kenneth C. Davis
