I don't know if this would count as a book but, currently I am reading a series of articles titled The History of Circumcision: The Mysterious Abyssinians, by James Bruce.

At the moment, I'm reading about female excision or female circumcision, which IMO is more mutilation than anything else.

Isn't all circumcision mutilation of some kind? You're cutting off pieces of your genitalia, fer Crissakes.

I seem to remember that that series got weaker as it went on. The second book wasn't as good as the first book but better than the third book. etc.

It wasn't bad but the historical parallels and "writing down" were pretty jarring at times. Yes, I get that there's a subtle allegory drawing parallels between ancient Rome and the present day etc etc. Please keep it subtle.

(Did anyone else think that this whole concept was not well suited for a book at all? I think it would've made much more sense as a multimedia internet entertainment in which the focus remained throughout on the titular games. Maybe it would start out following the participants from their respective districts but not for half the story's run. A similar concept is Homestuck, except with more of the feel of a reality show and perhaps greater interactivity. I dunno, maybe I'm overthinking things.)

Ilium by Dan Simmons.

Struggling a bit at the moment, but I think when it's settled down a bit and all the characters are established it'll be an easier read.

In the case of women, it's more pronounced. The clitoris is removed, in most cases, under unhygienic circumstances (the excision is performed in many cases by a barber) and many suffer from infection and even death. But let us not get into this discussion here. This thread is not for that.

I thought the more common form was to just remove the clitoral hood, and some just make a token cut of the same tissue.

In the collection of essays I'm reading, the Abyssinians remove the hood, the clitoris and then sow the labia together, leaving only a small opening where urine and menstrual blood can seep through. They do this, often, to both boys and girls (circumcision that is) before hitting puberty.

Yeah, them Abyssinians are fun. I thought for some reason (it could be the few beers before now) that you had said Assyrians... just slightly different people there. :P

Not advisable, but hey, sometimes one needs to approach such horrors with humor, or one just sits down and cry. :)

Thinking about re-reading 'La Dame d'Esprit', by Judith P. Zinsser.
