Descartes Discourse on the Method. Something of a disappointment, the meat in the sandwich is very thin. The interesting and useful bit, is in with a lot of guff, and self justification. The annoying 'I've used my method to discover a lot of truths but I'm not going to tell you what they are', a laughably bad 'proof' of God and the soul and some stuff about the heart heating up the blood.
Everything is intertwinkled

I just finished the 2nd novel in the Ciaphas Cain Savior of the Imperium Omnibus by Sandy Mitchel. The Last Ditch was pretty good, his arguments with the other Commissar was great and the beginning of the novel set on the out of control ship was probably my favorite part.

Now reading Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I'm only some 47 pages of 268-ish pages in, and while I do find it pretty unoriginal, it's not a bad reading by any means.

"Shear trouble" read. Harlequin romance for 60+old people. Some sleuthing and lots of cooking. And yes, useful quilting tips.

Next: William Gibson, "virtual light".

And just bought, "Norse Mythology" by Neil Gaiman.

It is from 1989... lovely read. I really liked it when I read it in 1996.

The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Just finished the first chapter of The SIgn of Four where Watson calls Holmes out on his drug use (legal at the time) and Holmes explains it by saying he can't stand for his "superfine mind" to be idle for any length of time. Fictional of course but it's convenient for the Holmes legend how all the facts just happen to fit with his "analytical" deductions, not to mention how the most crucial of those are kept from the reader until the final revelation. These tales would be completely unrecognizeable to a reader of modern mystery/detective/spy literature, where nothing is as it seems and the main task of the protagonist is usually to make such a nuisance of him or herself that the bad guys are provoked into actions that reveal their crimes and objectives.

I quite agree. The Man Who Would Be King – Rudyard Kipling; A Study in Scarlet – Arthur Conan Doyle; The Time Machine – H. G. Wells; all from the 80s and 90s
