The Northern Expedition: China's National Revolution Of 1926-1928 by Donald A. Jordan. My grandfather lived in Fujian Province at the time of the KMT's Northern Expedition (who he joined up with) to try and unify China, so I'm just trying to get in touch with some of the major historical events that shaped my family.

Inside Central America by Clifford Krauss, the chapter on Costa Rica. So far I have learned that Costa Ricans are mostly white, unfailingly polite, have no army and generally avoid conflict; it seems to be the Minnesota of Central America. Also that there are bullfights there but the bull is never killed and any would-be toreador can play. I know that you can get legal residency there by showing an income of US$1000 a month and passing some background checks, also that unless something unexpected happens same-sex marriage will become legal there this Tuesday the 26th. Looking seriously at it as a bolthole in case things go pear-shaped in the Nifty Fifty.
