Ever heard of this Fiction Fantasy "Book"

Postby Iraza (Ancient) » Sat Jan 08, 2011 9:53 pm

Its actually a series, and was hoping to have a discussion about it. I came across them a few years ago. There are 27 Books complete now, and another on the way (Actually it might be finished, I'm not sure. Have not checked in a while.)

I really liked the Fantasy about them, but also they had truth to it.

They are called the "Gorean Saga" or "Chronicles of Counter-Earth" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gor

I like the Science Fiction and philosophy most about it. One thing I have noticed about the books is that they are based on the old Greek and Roman worlds to some degree. If you look at the world of Gor compared to our own, I would honestly rather live in theirs to a certain degree. Although the technology is limited on the planet I believe this is for the better. No Nuclear weapons to destroy themselves, and also it makes people not be lazy and actually work and do something. People live a lot longer too. If I can recall there was man a who lived to be like 800 I think, but I might be mistaken in this. Its been sometime since I have read anything about them.

Another thing is there politics like our world has, less fighting over stupid things. Honestly its more of an honest world. When reading the books it also shows the true nature that Man and Woman should have with each other. (Though Norman did write about a Male homosexual couple in one of his last books...this was in the late 80s to early 90s though I think, when Feminism came full circle much more since his first few books.) Though some might find them repulsive, as I have heard many say. I believe Gor is a very interesting subject. I'm even thinking of ordering some of the books quite soon, as I never got to read much of them. I have also forgotten alot about them.

Whats your thoughts on the books? did you like them?

Has no one ever heard of these books? If not take time to get familiar with them at least on Wikipedia. Also Google them, gets lots of great info.

I've heard of them but only in reference to people who have a bondage fetish, which apparently features prominently in the books. I'll pass thank you.

Actually if you look more into them its more than just that...in fact I really don't even see that in the books that much or at all. Your claim doesn't surprise me though, since a lot of people say that. Really you only provide an opinion, and the books have a much more deeper meaning.

I did a quick Google of "Mary Suetopia" but did not find much on it. Could you explain what you mean by that in a little more detail?

Does the books have Bondage and Rape? It depends on how you look at at. Looking into more detail of the books you can see there's more to it than that. Theres a lot to the books. I don't see it as bondage or rape, in fact Gorean are not what you would call "BDSM" or Bondage Fetish. Its something complete different. As for rape...its been so long since I have read the books that I can't really remember a specific case, however yes you could be right about that. Though I think it was even dishonorable in the books to do such a thing if I remember correctly.

From the phrase 'Mary Sue'?

Fiction fantasy "book"? So, it's only allegedly a book?

So far as I can recall, it's just a long line of pulp fantasy books filled with wall-to-wall rape and BDSM fetishes.

To quote Dorothy Parker, "This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."
