Wondering if this is right conduct in D&D

Postby Iraza (Ancient) » Sat Jan 08, 2011 7:33 pm

OK so a few weeks back I played some D&D with my uncle and a few close friends of his. From what I recall he said I could do pretty much anything within the game rules.
Now we get in our first battle a couple of Orcs and I decided to throw a rope on one of them and wrap it around him. I was successful and tried my best to fight the other ones while I held him. He was not tied yet though, I still held the rope in my hands.

Now we won the battle and we go a little farther. Finally night comes, and some kind of Ghost creature comes up behind me and touches me on my shoulder. My party members killed it and I was freed from its grasp. Afterward I threw a grappling hook into the air so that I could get into the trees to make a hammock for the night (They wanted to go on).

We were heading to North Haven. Some guy named Lord Patronage was paying us to kill some Kobolds there. Anyways while in the town I decided to get on a roof to survey the area to find the Kobolds. So the Guards came and told me to get down. I started laughing (Not at them). Then they shot, so I jumped off and started running when they told me to stop and pay a fine. I told them I only had 45 gold, when they wanted 50.

They said that would do. However I kept buying time by talking to them. Finally I threw the bag of gold on the ground and cried out to an Angel to come and help me. They shot me and put me in prison. My friends came looking for me and got me out. Then I ran off, and found a cave where I tried to fight a troll. I was killed and the game ended for me.

This was D&D 4.0 (Note this was my first game)

Yeah it was my first game, they got mad and pretty much kicked me from the group. They took the game a little too much for me, I was just having fun and enjoying the game. They were really into it, I understand its fun...but for me...just a game.

That's nothing, I nabbed the dragon's egg meant to be raised by our wizard and had my Orc character eat it for breakfast for shits and giggles, XD

Other than said wizard, my group thought it was funny as hell, though they did tranquilizer me when we got to town. Heh.

unfortunately, since it was your first time, you were rather 'over the top'. I've played with players that when they get bored of a sitation, they decide to 'stir' the pot and that really ruins it for everyone.

I did not think it was really that bad...I mean if you take a game so seriously that its like the only thing that matters than they really need some fresh air. I was trying to have fun with it and just do something to spice up the game or make it more exciting. Now at the end taking off on my own...well maybe I should have stayed so we could of continued. However they were abit unmerciful at the end of the game to me as well. Though you would of had to been there to actually know what went on. I tried to play the best I could, was new to the game and rules, and was just learning. I tried out different things and just enjoyed myself and play free loose with no strings attached. Though I did not cheat or say something like my warrior has 2000 Strength! Because that would be against the rules and be no fun at all. Also later I came across a post online by someone else who played D&D and said its more realistic to spilt up the party because that would happen in Real life if the story was true, but its only RP. Also as I said I dont take it seriously, just for fun.

As long as rules aren't totally violated (some good players and DMs certainly know how to bend them to their will though) then everything is just fine. It is annoying to other players when someone goes over the top but sometimes it happens.

I had a wizard that continually cast charm monster on a T-Rex and eventually the DM and other players got sick of it but it was fun for me...

Its a good idea though to try and remain in the comfort levels of other players, I've been in games with people who were seriously fucked up and it basically made the game suck.

I've always wanted to try D&D. I created a game somewhat like it that turned out to be really fun. I realized something that day; It's be way more fun just to roam around than to do big campaigns. Just screw around. I ran around in caves with some skeleton dude, and I ended up being the richest person with the best stuff. And f**k DMs. Let everyone be a 'partial DM' and let each player rob prehistoric hobos in a moat of all their burgers, and eat dragon eggs. Fuck rules.

and what those players did in some of those games also thought what they did wasn't 'that bad'. they thought they were spicing up the game but in fact they were halting the storyline. granted without knowing what the scenario or story was, I can't say whether or not their reactions were also over the top.

I mean I played in 'police' style games where one character, in the course of carrying out his duty, would chase the only witness underground leaving the rest of us with nothing to do but wait for the inevitable decent into anarchy as rival criminal elements started an all out war in our streets. he was only trying to 'spice' things up and he was having fun. this person, in the course of 'having fun' managed to kill the entire party multiple times. and that gets old really fast for everyone else who was enjoying the game.

I'm not saying what you did was wrong. but for me, I would see how the group would play first, get the feel of it, then stretch my legs.

I've been in groups that LOVE PvP (Player vs Player) and I've been in groups that hate PKing. (Player Killing). at least you were willing to stay and deal with the results of your actions. that's a big plus in my opinion. I've seen players bail after fucking up a game. I do hope you find another group tho.

"Right conduct" in D&D depends entirely on the desires of the group.

If players are well-matched in terms of their expectations for play, D&D can be a wonderful experience for everyone.

If players aren't really on the same page (as happened with you), campaigns can be irritating for some of the players, and problems like these can arise.

The solution is simply to ask others what they are looking for in the experience of the game.

Yeah, pretty much. There certainly are super-serious gamers out there, but even the casual ones will eventually get annoyed by constant shenanigans that screw them over. Like you said, it's a game, but games are supposed to be fun, and covering for the one guy who keeps getting in trouble stops being fun eventually.

With that said, the DM sounds like he could've used a bit of work. Having guards shoot at you because you're standing on a roof in order to look for kobolds that Lord Pantaloons or whatever is paying you to kill sounds iffy as hell. Of course, I don't really know the details, but whatever.

Also, while you should avoid doing random monkeycheese crap that can possibly kill PCs, important NPCs, and even entire campaigns, don't be afraid to think outside the box. Wrapping an orc in rope in a fight is cool as hell. Ditching the party to go cavorting in random caves... not so much. And ignore that guy who said it's "more realistic" to split the party; while it can work in certain situations, it's often a big hassle, and not all DMs can pull it off.

I've been trying to set up a 4E game with my friends for the past six months now (I think we're cursed or something) that I'm going to DM; I'm going to keep a nice, fluid campaign with as close to zero railroading as possible, but I'm kinda worried that these guys will find a way to launch themselves off a cliff. Oh, well, just gotta keep faith and hope they don't teabag a dragon or something.

By the way, what race/class were you?

I've got a group of players that are always looking out for sidequests, that kind of gets annoying when they have to find the words first uttered by god that brought about creation before the empire falls into civil war; but hey....
