Unfinished Books of The Forgotten

Postby Alevuss » Wed Dec 01, 2010 4:24 pm

I'm sure nearly everyone has one: A book that you began reading, but then at a some point, you became wrapped up in something else and stopped reading it. Weeks, months, or even years later, you are looking through your book shelves or closet and you find that book you never finished. If you're me, you'll read a little, say you'll read more later, and then put it away and continue reading it through repeated discovering and reading little pieces of it by the month or more.

My question is: Do you have any books that you have started reading, but after a while, became to busy and forgot about them, or found another book that occupied your time instead?

Right now, some books that have been sitting on the shelves for at least 8 months now are:

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Guardians of Ga'Hoole: The War of The Ember by Kathryn Lasky
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling
Vampire Hunter D: Raiser of Gales by Hideyuki Kikuchi
When life gives you lemons. . . You might as well shove 'em where the sun don't shine, because you sure as hell aren't ever going to see any lemonade.-Rob Thurman

I've never had an unfinished book like you describe in the opening paragraph. I tend to always finish the books that I start before moving on to the next one, although sometimes with a bit of a gap in the middle.

The only unfinished book of any kind that I can think of right now is The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky. I couldn't get into it at all and after struggling like hell to force myself to get about a quarter of the way through I just gave up. I still might go back to it at some point, or else try Crime and Punishment instead.

Well...I started Finnegan's Wake and somehow got through about 20 pages (about up to the point where the jemmy and the dummy were roguing and poguing in front of the Jarl van Hoother or something) and that's when I just said, "Later."

I have not opened it since.

Then there's Remembrance of Things Past. I got no further than about halfway through the translator's introduction, where I read that the first publisher to whom Proust had submitted the book rejected it, saying "A gentleman does not take 40 pages to describe how he undresses to go to bed at night!" That's when I, again, just said "Later." (I did about as good as the choral group in the "All-England Summarize Proust Competition" that got no further than, "Proust in his first book wrote about, wrote about, wrote about...")

But I did read the bit about the madeleine. :p

Coccygia, I think I can understand your opinion of Proust. After all, of all my books, only one remains unfinished (not even the first chapter; oh, the blasphemy!) and it is Proust's 'Sodom and Gomorrah'.

I started reading 1984 while in the middle of Dune and just forgot about it.

"But who prays for Satan? Who in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most, our one fellow and brother who most needed a friend yet had not a single one, the one sinner among us all who had the highest and clearest right to every Christian's daily and nightly prayers, for the plain and unassailable reason that his was the first and greatest need, he being among sinners the supremest?"
Mark Twain
