Hitchcock Movies

Postby Mike the Progressive » Mon Nov 22, 2010 3:00 am

So I think everybody knows (or should know) Alfred Hitchcock, the famous English movie director known for his psychological thrillers. But what are your favorite movies of his?

For me...
-The Birds
-North by Northwest (Cary Grant was great in this one)
-Psycho (shower scene, wat?)
-Notorious (Grant+Bergman=Awesome)
-Rear Window (Jimmy Stewart who was just cool and Grace Kelly was hot, as always)
-Vertigo (another Stewart classic, also my uncle knew Kim Novak, grew up in the same neighborhood).

So any others I failed to mention? Others you like? Some listed above? Why?

I think Rope is my favourite. Apart from the story and suspense being as Hitchcock as always, I really like the way it was shot. He used really long takes and disguised some of the cuts between takes. If you've already seen the film or don't mind the risk of spoilers, this makes for quite an interesting read of some of the production tricks.

I also loved Rear Window, The Birds, Psycho and Dial 'M' for Murder in roughly that order. North by Northwest was good as well, but I think the increase in action scenes takes away some of the suspense which makes it not as good as the others imo. Strangers on a Train is also in the good-but-not-great category.

And I have to say that I wasn't too keen on Vertigo at all. The first half or so was nice and tense but I thought the second half just meandered along a little. It did pick up again towards the end thought, and it was nice to see the "Vertigo effect" (dolly zoom).

I have yet to see Dial 'M' for Murder, but I'll have to see Rope sometime.

That was the one I was going to mention. Vertigo and Psycho are my two favorites I believe... I haven't seen Rope yet. Most of Hitchcock's stuff is at least above average, though. I just more people could get past the lack of color...
