Top Gear comes to America

Postby Hegstoria » Thu Nov 11, 2010 5:13 pm

Top Gear America
Well first off, who the hell are those three guys? Second, is the History Channel really just done with actually showing programs that have to do with History? Third, why god, why? Top Gear only works for one reason, Jeremy, Richard, and James are a bunch of idiots, but they're funny idiots who have great banter with each other. In my own opinion they are the real reason people love Top Gear, and I don't think that some random guys are going to be able to do it like them. I know for myself, I'm not a big car guy, but I just can't help but sit down and watch them (it also helps that their time slot is before BBC News, but I still enjoy them regardless) because I find them so funny.

Plus, with the regular Top Gear being on BBC America, is this really going to be able to draw an audience? To be perfectly honest, I hope and don't think it will, but I suppose I should hear your opinions as well. So NS, what do you think of this new Top Gear and the fact that it's going to be on the History Channel? Do you think it'll make it? What are your thoughts on these new hosts, are they any good?

Also, two of the hosts do seem to know what they're talking about (as one is a race car driver, and the other hosts a show on SPEED), whilst the third is simply a comedian. Just letting you all know.

I like Top Gear, it's a car show I can actually stomach. As to why History Channel has it, and why it lacks history... don't know. They should rename themselves "Reality TV Masquerading With Little Historical Relevance Channel". Is that too long? W/e.

I doubt the U.S. version will be good. Shoulda just had a channel over here pick the U.K. version up. Isn't Discovery in some agreement with BBC?

Discovery dropped it, they were going to have it.

The UK version is on BBC America, we're not very far behind the UK, if at all, with the show.

Really? Discovery dropped it? Maybe they deserve to be shot up.

Yea the history channel really doesn't cover history and what they call history UFOs and Nostradamus shit doesn't have much basis.

The UK version is the best and always will be if it sticks to its current format.
TBH, the Hitler Channel has become so laughable these days, although I do enjoy some of its programs.

Yeah, I guess they realized what NBC did and what HC fails to, that Top Gear can't be reproduced.

Hell, I'm American and I want nothing to do with that version of Top Gear. Just the preview alone discourages me from watching it. Come to think of it though, all other versions of Top Gear beyond the UK version aren't very funny and if anything a bit pathetic. And then to top it all off it's hosted by the History Channel.

Wat. Am. I. Reading.

History Channel should really stop doing stupid shows that have nothing to do with history and instead go back to, oh I don't know, history. It's probably not going to have anything that most people like about Top Gear and just be muscle cars we've all seen several thousand times before. History Channel/Top Gear US, I am dissapoint.

I'd quite like to see them do a reversal and drive through somewhere like Brentwood in cars spray painted with slogans like 'fake tan looks gay' or 'hardcore dance is shit'.

That is literally my favorite stunt they ever pulled, and it would be hilarious to see the US version try to do something similar.

Oh and sorry for the bump, I just realized that there were posts in here I hadn't seen.

I don't remember the History Channel ever showing anything remotely historical, except for a few odd days out of the year, and even then those weren't all too accurate. The only good shows on the History Channel nowadays are Lock N' Load, The Universe, and (I hate to say it) Pawn Stars.

Which is coming to the History Channel. Others had already mentioned the dubious nature of the channel's other programs, indicating that Top Gear is further evidence of the channel's degradation, so I just tossed that out there.

For better or for worse, one can still learn about the history of bricks on the History Channel.

I'm not sure whether to be disappointed or relieved that they aren't just American versions of Hammond Clarkson and May.
