Australian Music

Postby Forster Keys » Sun Nov 07, 2010 3:48 am

I was watching the ARIAs and I wondered, do anyone of you people out there in the wide world listen to any Australian music? Do you like it? Have you even heard of any Australian bands and artists? Pray, tell...

Rolf Harris is treated as a Godlike genius in the UK. Altogether now...

I expect that Australian artists are maybe the fourth best represented in my music collection after Brits, Americans and Canadians.

I particularly like Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the Avalanches and Cut Copy.

You have good tastes. The Avalanches have been going to release their second album for years though. I'm getting annoyed waiting.

Pendulum are pretty big in the UK.

Salmonella Dub are reasonably popular. Although they're from New Zealand.

John Williams is still going strong.

I liked Virgin Black's first album, but the second seemed like they were trying too hard and I haven't been paying much attention since then. This Is Your Captain Speaking have a very good first album. On a similar note, Laura are pretty good too.

When Day Descends are one of my favourite bands of all, but I'd be surprised if anyone has heard of them - "a progressive atmospheric rock/metal band ... filling the gap between progressive rock, progressive metal and post rock". I'd strongly recommend this song if that's interested anyone.

I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

Its turning into the electronic Chinese Democracy. My hopes aren't high, but I hear Ariel Pink is going to be featured on it and he's pretty awesome.

My auntie (who lives in Australia) sent me a Triple J hot 100 CD a few years back, that got me into artists like The Herd, Butterfingers, Wolfmother and Josh Pyke. I also like Pendulum, The Avalanches, and I'm sure there are others, I just can't think of them right now

One word with connotations of electricity.
AC-friggin-DC.
we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

Yay for the Cutting and the falling of snow! Great bands, I feel. Though I don't know Nick Cave, or any seeds of malicious intent... but oh! He did the soundtrack to The Road, which is good (I don't think it should've had a soundtrack mind, but it was good). How about Architecture In Helsinki? Not so sure about their latest album, but In Case We Die is great also.

Ah. That my friend is the Russel Crowe effect in action. If any New Zealander reaches a certain amount of fame, he automatically becomes an Aussie.

That's some pretty wide tastes you got there. If you like the Herd and Aussie hip-hop you can't go past the Hilltop Hoods though. Wolfmother's an interesting case, they've completely reformed almost. Only the lead singer remains from the band that produced the first album.

I Was Only Nineteen is such a good song. Have you heard the Herd cover of it? I didn't mind it, though it'd be a bit too hip-hop for some.
