It's simply impossible to make a top 5. If you can make a top 5, you should listen to more music... no offense. I couldn't even make a top 5 out of The Mars Volta tracks, come on. That's like Sophie's choice

I've got news for you. I listen to A LOT of music across many genres. I have many artists I like who cut across a spectrum of musical styles and have many, many songs I consider among my favourites.

However, I do have one singer/songwriter/artist who is a clear number one, and a few songs that clearly stand the test of time as my favourites. There's nothing wrong with loving a variety of artists and songs, but having a few that qualify as absolute favourites above all others.

Artists are different than songs. An artist has a wide variety of music to choose from. If one artist has two hundred songs and one hundred fifty of them are good, and another artist has only one absolutely amazing song, I'd say artist one is better. It's like Mike Oldfield. The only album of his I like is "Tubular Bells", and the song itself is a masterpiece. It's better than any Led Zeppelin song could ever be. However, Mike's other stuff doesn't tickle my fancy as much as Zep's.
I am not at all interested in immortality, only in the taste of tea.

Over my years, I have seen the bands that seemed to have the potential to stand the test of time vanish into obscurity, swallowed up by mainstream bullshit, or pop, or boybands or rap.

I can have 5 songs that I listen to more than all the rest. And, Sober in my opinion is the best Tool song, or song(period) to be released after 1990.

I can come up with a #1 song and a #1 artist (which are both different), but I'd have a hell of a time picking just 5 songs out of over 25,000.

Hell, I can come up with 5 artists and maybe 5 albums, but no way in hell can I come up with 5 songs without wanting to change it 5 minutes later.

I'm always so alone in these threads.

This isn't a definitive list, ask me in five minutes and it will be different songs

J. Edgar Hoover performed by the Kronos Quartet
Lickity Split Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Mr. PC John Coltrane
Haitian Fight Song Charles Mingus
Lonely Woman Ornette Coleman
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.
