Meh, Metallica's only great album was Kill em All, and then Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets were decent, while AJFA was so-so, and the Black album was absolute shit. Nothing after that has been any better, but Death Magnetic was a rather small step forward.

And all this time I thought I was the only one. I applaud you for your taste.

Genghis Tron? They're basically a combination of grindcore, electronic stuff, and a small amount of grunge-y vibe on some songs. Yes, there isn't really a term for that, but, for the purpose of making a poll, they're "other."

This band is awesome. They're like Decapitated on steroids with classical influence. And not lame "classical influence" the band made up to look smarter. Actual, audible influence from classical music.

Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning are the two I listen to the most, though once in a while I'll turn on MoP or AJFA. I tend not to listen to albums made after 1990 by pretty much anyone who was around in the 80s. There's only a few that I can appreciate from that period. Oppressing the Masses, Rust in Peace, Persistence of Time, Open Hostility, Individual Thought Patterns, Epidemic of Violence, Nothing to Gain and Think This are some I can think off that are very good. Meanwhile you get Black Album, Load, Countdown to Extinction, Sound of White Noise, etc for your trouble after that.

What about Enter the Sandman

No thanks... I'm so sick of that song. Average riff, horribly slow tempo, garbage lyrics, Kirk spending his solo time stomping his wah pedal like it's a black man in the 1950s...

Kirk is not terrible, he just got less and less creative as time went on. On Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning he was very good. He used the pedal even then, but he actually used it in a very neat capacity, mostly in masking the sound as he moved up a string.

I'm more of a thrash metal/early death metal man myself. When I say early death metal I mean bands that still infuse some thrash style: (early) Cannibal Corpse, Death and Morbid Angel all do that. Ripping Corpse and Morbid Saint are thrash/death. Some more thrash metal: Torture, Slaughter (Canada), Realm, Kublai Khan, Destruction, Sadus, Vektor, Death Angel. I must admit I love old school Megadeth up until Countdown to Extinction, and really like Metallica up until Master of Puppets. Never liked most black metal, it isn't the theme that bothers me so much as the music itself...

I like several bands from most metal genres but the largest segment of it is black metal at the moment. But as with my music generally I don't tend to like bands who stick rigidly to one subgenre formula because I get bored halfway through the album.

To give a few examples of things I like...

Cormorant (progressive black metal)

Gigantic Brain (grindcore/ambient)

After ages growing up in a college town where the general musical environment is "Jam band" I finally found a friend who likes metal. It's awesome. I'm going to see Dimmu Borgir with her in two weeks. Not sure about Dimmu Borgir, given their high level of "suck" lately, but they're playing with Enslaved. And Enslaved fucking rock.

Yeah none of my friends like Metal so it is really lame. I should probably look around for my People on Campus somewhere. Has to a be a Metalhead in this backwater town.

Seen both live and they both sucked. Although, they were on tour with Machine Head and the crowd were chanting "Machine Fucking Head" all the way through their sets so maybe that put them off.. Dragonforce were playing too and they also sucked along with Arch Enemy who fucking rocked. Angela Gossow doesn't sing though so maybe that has something to do with it..

Machine Head is a band I have to see live...I keep missing my opportunities, either due to travel issues, or I can't get off of work.

Although I found Black Label Society to be worse than anything else I've ever heard live...I think it's more because all the fans are drunken messes.

...none of the suck could detract from the experience, however, cause it was Iron Maiden and original lineup Black Sabbath as headliners.

I can die happy.

Unrelated note, in reference to Metallica, I only enjoy their first 3 albums, though AJFA wasn't terrible. Ride The Lightning is probably their best individual track.

Off of Metallica, one band that never gets enough attention it's Vio-lence. They need to do another reunion, but they've said no after 2001 They put out three solid albums from 1988 to 1992, and existed as a real heavyweight force as early as 84. Eternal Nightmare, Oppressing The Masses, and Nothing to Gain.samples of each.

I've always found it strange people who live in backwater towns have so much trouble finding people into metal, given how many people you hear complaining about how they can't find anyone else who likes metal in tiny towns. You'd think a town would have at least two of those people.

Although I'm a bit easier to pick out, given I have hair halfway down my back and a dress style that incorporates shirts with illegible slogans and huge amounts of satanic imagery. Which was nice in high school, I had no trouble walking through the halls. My school was three hundred students over capacity, but apparently a few inverted crosses and pentagrams is still all it takes to get people out of your way.

I've always found it hilarious that metal is still one of the most "feared" genres of music, given that many of the nicest, most thoughtful, and intelligent people I've ever met listened to (And a good number played) uber-gorey satanic death metal.

I mentioned in another thread I'm a guitarist, but unfortunately have been having trouble getting a band together. I'm hoping to get some recording stuff and making recordings soon, because I can do vocals and program drums. Unfortunately, it's hard to find people who want to play metal and actually have the chops to play it. I mean, I support anybody making music, but it's awful when you meet a band who needs another guitarist, and the current guitarist thinks he's god's gift to mankind when he strains to skip strings or play a sweep cleanly.
