Masterpiece Theatre presents: Sherlock Holmes

Postby MisanthropicPopulism » Fri Oct 22, 2010 7:34 am

I'm sure there was a topic about it some time back but for those who don't know, the guys behind Dr Who at the BBC made a 3-episode pilot (basically) for a new Sherlock Holmes series. For those in America who didn't... manage to watch it any other way, it's popularity has apparently guaranteed it a showing on American tv. Starting this Sunday and the following two, Masterpiece Theatre on PBS will be airing the three Sherlock Holmes episodes.

Summary: This series sets Sherlock Holmes in the current era - within the past year or two - using the war in the Middle East to provide basically an identical set up to the books for the first episode where it mixes up A Study in Scarlet and some other details to demonstrate "Hey, you are watching Sherlock Holmes" with the current era. The next two go off on slightly more unique adventures ending on an epic cliffhanger.

I remember reading about it on IMDB when they cast Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch as the leads. I like both of those guys, as well as Steven Moffat, and have been looking forward to seeing it, although, for some reason I thought I later read they weren't going to make it into a full series. I could be wrong about that though.

So did Dr.Watson get shot in the Iraq war, or did he still get shot in Afghanistan. It would also be interesting to see how the show handles Holmes recreational substance abuse, seeing as he did somewhat glorify it. I think this show might lose a lot of what it was to be Sherlock Holmes, today's society does not allow for the same predicaments as did that of the late 19th century. If the show is narrated by Watson, as the stories were, he would need to watch his language as he is always saying "I ejaculated" in the original (Causing me to snicker immaturely).

It's still Afghanistan because Afghanistan is still at war. The substance abuse was never glorified, it was omnipresent in the background though. It is implied in the new series.

I watched it on the BBC a while back :) It's worth watching in my opinion.

I watched it last night, and my husband and I both enjoyed. Looking forward to seeing the next episode. Why did they only do 3 episodes for the first season?

Some sort of mini-series pilot thing. But it generated enough interest that they are filming a full season.
