Even at such a young age I had read 1984 and found the Orwellian dystopia to be far, far superior. That, and for a dystopia, the ending was too cheery, leading me to believe that the ending was a lie.
Besides, the whole transfer of memory thing was cheesy, not to mention the fact that the government system neither tried very hard to brainwash nor make happy it's inhabitants. That, and it didn't even go that far into police state territory, either.

As well, if he does make it he might have PTSD like Alex in Forbidden City, though in The Giver it's mainly from learning his father euthanizes babies and then throws them in the trash can like it's some sort of genetic engineering thing, PLUS the fact that he's now disturbed by his so-called "perfect" society.

I wouldn't call it euthanasia. It was a perfectly healthy baby, just a twin. I'd call that plain ol' murder.

No. It was euthanasia plain and clear. The baby was undesirable (so to speak), and reminiscent of other dystopian societies, they eliminated it. This was not murder, since murder has to entail illegal killing.

That's not what euthanasia means.
Euthanasia is a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life to relieve intractable suffering. What you are describing is not euthanasia, but eugenics, since the intention is not to relieve pain or suffering. From a legal perspective, it is not strictly murder since it is done under a legal framework.
