To anybody who has/is going to read this, don't even try. I quit on the first paragraph.

This book was interesting. I had to read it in high school. This book angered me. Everyone was controlled and nobody was free.

Besides, the whole transfer of memory thing was cheesy, not to mention the fact that the government system neither tried very hard to brainwash nor make happy it's inhabitants. That, and it didn't even go that far into police state territory, either.

Perhaps you're missing the point? I didn't like the book very much either, but it irks me when people gripe about trivial things.

EDIT-- Also, the "I read this at [insert young age] look at me!" mentality also irks me. I've read many books at exceedingly young ages, and I understood the plot well enough (and it contributed to my relatively good English) but I've realised that I never understood them.

I really didn't find it that sad, to be honest. It seemed like all the emotion one might feel was forced on the reader, it didn't come naturally, sort of a "OMG ISN'T THIS TERRIBLE FEEL SAD NOW, OK!" type of thing, rather than just letting the content and prose speak for itself.

EDIT: There be spoilurz here. If you read this novel, then DON'T OPEN THE SPOILER.

Yeah, that was a great novel about a dystopian future. The ambigious ending also set it up, because we aren't sure if he dies on the way with his baby son or manages to actually make it.
As well, if he does make it he might have PTSD like Alex in Forbidden City, though in The Giver it's mainly from learning his father euthanizes babies and then throws them in the trash can like it's some sort of genetic engineering thing, PLUS the fact that he's now disturbed by his so-called "perfect" society.

I wouldn't call it euthanasia. It was a perfectly healthy baby, just a twin. I'd call that plain ol' murder.

No. It was euthanasia plain and clear. The baby was undesirable (so to speak), and reminiscent of other dystopian societies, they eliminated it. This was not murder, since murder has to entail illegal killing.

Yep. It was euthanasia... some against this society would call it murder, but I'd agree with Buffet and Colbert, it's euthanasia in their terms.

Yes, I have gone to school, although it feels weirder when you don't read it in high school but rather get it read to you in fourth grade.

Yeah, high school seemed late to me, I think it was the beginning of 6th grade that I was assigned to read it.

I had to read it the summer between sixth and seventh. We discussed it a bit in the beginning of seventh.

Things must be taken into literary (and often historical) context. If you don't do that, you're not reading.

That's not what euthanasia means.

Euthanasia is a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life to relieve intractable suffering. What you are describing is not euthanasia, but eugenics, since the intention is not to relieve pain or suffering. From a legal perspective, it is not strictly murder since it is done under a legal framework.

I fail. Epically. Yes, eugenics is what I mean.

It was summer reading in my first year of HS. It was, admittedly, much better than some other assigned books, but I simply didn't like it.
