Cloud With a Chance of Meatballs 2 looked bad in my opinion....I liked the first one. But I was not impressed with the trailer for the 2nd one. The humor felt way too forced and desperate.

"There's a leek in the boat!"

Yeah, I laughed a little, but my God.

Anyway, been watching Hemlock Grove. Ignored it because the trailer made it look bad, but it ain't half bad. Netflix is really on a roll with their shows. Even ones I thought looked bad end up being fairly good. There's a lot of good acting in it and interesting characters. And like with pretty much any show I of course end up having a crush on one of the characters...The one my sister predicted I would like. She knows me too well.

Watched Walking Tall last night (the 2004 version) - it was awful. It was poorly written, directed, paced and acted - which I suppose is to be expected given that it stars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Johnny Knoxville... I was also not a fan of the claim that it was based on a true story - I read up on Buford Pusser after seeing the film as it seemed a bit dubious, and found that whilst the basic premise may be similar, the actual story (such as it is) can't really be said to bear much of a resemblance to reality.

Overall, maybe a 2/10 if I'm being generous.

Epic. Animated fantasy-action film about tiny humanoids living in the forest behind a scientist's house... the scientist is obsessed with proving their existence, to the point where he has become estranged from his wife. His daughter comes to live with him and they wind up being drawn into the battle between good and evil going on in the forest.

Decent action -- especially by kid-flick standards -- and some fairly good humor make it worth a watch. Incredibly detailed worldbuilding and a great story make it worth repeat watching. 9/10

Bronson, which was well shot and performed, I see what everyone was on about with Hardy (I had only seen him as Bane, so, this was nice) but I didn't feel like there was any focus to the story, so it didn't really have a conclusion. There wasn't an idea other than, "This dude is out of his head."

then

Robot & Frank, which I rather liked but the key element, Frank's memory problems, was a little inconstant and therefore didn't ring true with some of the reveals that went with it, and didn't really have the pay off with the question of whether or not to wipe the memory of Robot. But again, well done and performed. Saarsgard is a little creepier now and he was always a little creepy.

Priest, it was rubbish. Never seen it before but large parts of it seemed familiar, I guess it was just so clichéd and derivative. Like resurfacing memories of the in-flight movie during an alien abduction.

I saw 2 over the weekend:

Hercules: Insert Subtitle Here, But Damned If I Remember It

I'll admit that as an action, slapstick and horror fan who avoids biopics, period dramas and other genres that would ordinarily be considered "quality filmmaking" but I consider "quality naps" my bar might be set a bit lower than some people's, so take the fact I liked this movie with a grain of salt. That being said, if you're looking to be entertained rather than intellectually stimulated or culturally enriched you can do a lot worse than this film. It has a fast-paced, interesting story, eye candy for both male and female viewers (I saw the film with 2 women and another guy, and afterward the 2 women were discussing who was hotter, Liam McIntyre or Kellan Lutz, while the 2 guys agreed that the actress playing Hebe -- whose name escapes me at the moment -- was really tasty) and enough sense to get out of its own way and let the audience follow the action instead of using stupid camera gimmicks to needlessly confuse things like, say, a Christopher Nolan action movie.

The only problem with the movie is that, like everything else in its genre, it's a little racist. I'd pay extra to see a film like this named Heracles, with actual Greek actors instead of Brits.

9/10

Devil's Due

Watched it because I like horror and have been a fan of Allison Miller's since discovering her on NBC's Go On last year, even though I knew I was going to have issues with the handheld cameras. Probably shouldn't have bothered... though Miller is just as good as I thought she'd be and her male lead (name escapes me, once again... I'm getting old I guess) does well too, the scares are few and far between and marred by the confusion of the handheld camera far more than they are in the Paranormal Activity franchise. There are a couple of decent horror sequences still, including one that actually has an interesting camera angle of the good variety (a guy who's holding a camera while falling onto the roof of a car), suggesting that this director might have great potential if only he could commit less fully to this particular subgenre. There's also a couple of obligatory moments of suspension of disbelief-breaking handheld stupidity: "Ooh, a weird noise in the middle of the night. I'll reach for my camera instead of my gun, that should be enough to go investigate!"

I agree with everything you just said. One of my favorite movies of 2013. The only reason those elitist snobs at the Academy didn't nominate this movie for anything major is because of its genre, and that's an asinine way to do an awards program.

Eh, I already expect it wasn't likely Oscar-worthy. None of the Marvel movies really are.

This kind of stupidity is always hilarious in movies. Not in a good way. It's like come on people. For one, we should be offended by movies that think we're that stupid in the first place. I see this kind of stupidity a lot in action movies.

As far as movies go for me, I haven't been watching much of anything. Been more on a video game spree lately.
