I normally find myself in opposition to the classicists, but there are some old films I love.

The Longest Day
Forbidden Planet
Lawrence of Arabia
The Eagle Has Landed (nothing to do with Apollo 11)
And anything by Mel Brooks or Monty Python

As for more recent films, some that I would consider great are:
The Dark Knight
Lord of the Rings
Princess Mononoke
The Lion King
Apollo 13
Impeach Ramses, Legalize Monotheism, Slavery is Theft, MOSES 1400 BCE

Pro: Democracy, Egalitarianism, Judaism, Separation of Church and State, Israel, Arab Spring, Gay Rights, Welfare, Universal Healthcare, Regulated Capitalism, Scientific Rationalism, Constitutional Monarchy
Against: Dictatorships, Racism, Nazism, Theocracy, Anti-Semitism, Sexism, Homophobia, Imperialism, Creationism, Genocide, Slavery

There are a few movies that come to mind when I think of classics:

Scrooge (1951), starring Alistair Sim. He is the definitive Scrooge, and this is the definitive take on A Christmas Carol, as far as I'm concerned.

The Ten Commandments (1956), starring Yul Brenner, Charlton Heston, and Anne Baxter. I'm not even religious and I recognize this film as a classic because it had an epic scope, decent effects for the time, and pretty solid acting.

The Mouse That Roared (1959), starring Peter Sellers, Peter Sellers, and Peter Sellers. A small and unknown nation declares war on the United States... and wins.

Kelly's Heroes (1970), starring Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, and Donald Sutherland. I found this movie to be absolutely hilarious, and it actually had some decent action moments, too. All in all enjoyable and one I would watch again and again.

The Ruling Class (1972), starring Peter O'Toole and Alistair Sim. Peter O'Toole is a deranged English nobleman in a parody of the aristocracy, who believes that he is God. And thus the hilarity begins...

Labyrinth (1986), starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Say what you will, I consider this a classic of the genre and a highly enjoyable film.

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990), starring Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, and Richard Dreyfuss. Tom Stoppard takes Shakespeare's Hamlet and perfects it. Given how much I adore Shakespeare's work, one could imagine how high my praise is for this film. A must-see for all, even those who loathe Shakespeare.

The Fisher King (1991), starring Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges, Amanda Plummer and David Hyde Pierce. Terry Gilliam directs a frantic melodramedy about a man (Robin Williams) whose life was destroyed by shock jockey Jeff Bridges. Many song numbers, gut-bustingly funny moments, and etcetera. Enjoyable.

Rob Roy (1995), starring Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, John Hurt and Tim Roth. My favourite historical epic. Neeson is the titular character, who does battle with Roth in what remains to date one of the best filmed duels ever.

Requiem for a Dream (2000), starring Jared Leto, Ellen Burstyn, Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly. Probably my favourite film on the subject matter, in spite of what others may think. Jared Leto was actually a decent actor, once, but the film was stolen by Ellen Burstyn and Jennifer Connelly.

28 Days Later (2002), starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Chris Eccleston and Brendan Gleeson. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland reinvent the survival horror genre with this wonderfully frantic zombie film which follows the escapades of Jim, Selina and others as they try to survive in a post-virus world. Unfortunate victim of a crappy sequel, but still an awesome movie.

This is my list. Other movies I was going to name here were already mentioned; to my knowledge, these ones haven't been. Keep in mind that this is a work of my opinion; you are all free to disagree.
