There is a good songs from 70s and 80s, but ussually I dont go that much down to the history.

This past year I've been really getting into Neofolk. I've found some favorites among the bands Rome, Sol Invictus, Death in June, :Of the Wand & The Moon: & Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio. Typical entry-level bands for the genre, I believe. I've been into a lot of Folk music before Neofolk, with a notable standout in Vixie & Tony, and I've recently begun delving into Leslie Fish whom I have quite enjoyed. I've had a soft spot for various rock and metal genres for some time. Folk-Metal & Folk-Rock alike are some of my favorites, with Dark Moor & Blackmore's Night being particularly notable groups to me. Symphonic Metal is another genre I regularly enjoy, and Nightwish, Epica, Sirenia, Symphony X, & Xandria have some of my favorite pieces in the genre. I'm a big fan of Todd Smith's projects, and have enjoyed pieces from all of his various bands, preeminently Dog Fashion Disco, but also Polkadot Cadaver & El-Creepo!. Goth Rock is another highly enjoyable genre, with The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, & Bauhaus being high among my favorites. Electronic Rock is a pretty great genre, too, and Ladytron & The Birthday Massacre number among my favorites there. Those are by no means the limits of the music I listen to, as I have a soft spot for lots of classical pieces, sea shanties, folk songs, even some contemporary pop hits, but it does go a long way of showcasing the "big hits" for me as it were.

I like most Dark Pop type music but specifically Neoni. I also really love most music from musicals, specifically Epic and Brightstar.

The long answer is long. I studied music formally without ever becoming good at it (because I didn't practice, gotta practice kids) so I like a lot of weird shit I was exposed to. Big advocate of weird shit. Modern compositions, free jazz and free jazz adjacent stuff. Music where someone just rewired an old synthesizer into a metal mask sculpture.

I also like incredibly simple and goofy stuff. I like Ska, pretty fond of bands like Perfect Thyroid and Skankin' Pickle. Fishbone. Not as big a fan of the ska bands that broke through like Sublime, Reel Big Fish, or Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Also tend to only like first wave original Jamaican ska (The Skatalites, early Marley) and third wave California/west coast Ska. For some reason 80s British ska...not that interesting to me. Can't really get into the English Beat etc. Specials hit or miss. Madness is cool.

I like a bunch of odd bands with super odd lyrics but are still fairly mainstream all things considered. They Might be Giants, Soul Coughing, Austin Lounge Lizards. There's probably a world where I like The Pet Shop Boys but it's not this one. I don't hate them, just...they're a 'friend's band' That band that you're not particularly into but your friend is so you know more about them than you would normally and you don't hate them, you just never listen to them on your own much. Same with David Byrne/Talking Heads. Different friend, same deal.

There's a one hit wonder that like most one hit wonders their one hit isn't really indicative of what the band actually is all about that I'm super into, I was before their hit and remain a fan today. The Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Mostly known these days for their questionable name. And for being the end of the momentary rise of swing in the 90s.

I was given a Pink Floyd album (Dark Side of the Moon natch) at the right time, so...them.

Usually when someone talks about jazz and rock it's something like Chicago when they were still the Chicago Transit Authority or Blood, Sweat, and Tears...or maybe that time that Sting recruited members of the Branford Marsalis quartet to be his band only to have them mock him with The Flintstones (something jazz people know because it uses the chord changes to I Got Rhythm colloquially known as 'Rhythm changes' because of how many pieces use them). Or jam bands that often have jazz artists as guest performers, like David Murray of the World Saxophone Quartet playing with the Grateful Dead.

I had a mysterious Steely Dan single when I was a kid that I don't know how it arrived in my room. I assume my uncle because my parents were not very hip and weren't likely to even know about a band named after a dildo in a William S Burroughs book. But I never really formed an attachment to them. I think the most attention I paid was when they used Dirty Work in a trailer for James Gunn's Suicide Squad.

If you need your walk to feel cool, though, there's always room for Fat Mama I didn't name it, but it is very groovy. A little on the Vince Guaraldi...you can imagine Snoopy getting up to shenanigans to this. Wrong cartoon, though. This is from Fat Albert. Another groovy walking piece from Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin. You fuckin' heard me. Before Don't Worry Be Happy he'd just do these weird improvised vocals without the multi tracking. Or words.

With a little of the edge sanded off but not too much there's always Weather Report.

I tend to only dig Frank Zappa if there are no lyrics. When I push the slider more towards rock on the rock/jazz spectrum it tends to be Funkadelic

Branford Marsalis did a bit of a hip hop/jazz fusion in the 90s that the suggested videos reminded me of with a band called Buckshot LeFunque. I saw them I think at Filmore, might have been Great American Music Hall.

There's a twofer in a collaboration between Medeski Martin & Wood and Sex Mob doing groovy covers of James Bond themes. Or Sex Mob doing a Nirvana song. This will become a theme.

There's also Charlie Hunter doing light jazz versions of Nirvana but mostly I like the names of his pieces, like Running in Fear from Imaginary Assailants or Mitch Better Have My Bunny

Before switching to film I was a music major (only got as far as an AA) but during that time I was also a buyer at a record store. You can kinda pin down 'when' by looking at the grouping of some of the recommendations.
