Favorite Military Tactic/ Strategy Book.

Postby ZellDincht » Mon Jun 07, 2010 6:04 pm

The only two that I have read are Sun Tzu the "Art of War" and "Frederick The Great's Instructions to His Generals." Naturally these two are my favorites. What is everyone elses favorites? What do you recommend for me to read?

Clausewitz's Vom Kriege is about as good as it gets after Sun Tzu.

Heinz Guderian was a tactical/strategic master. Look up Achtung Panzer.

As a note: Yes, he was a German in WWII, but identified more closely with Prussia and wasn't a racist.

Same goes for Erich von Manstein. Look up Lost Victories.

Someone saw me reading Sun Tzu's the "The Art of War" in mcdonald's the other day. They recommend me read "The Book Of Five Rings."
Has anyone read this before? I have done some research and it looks interesting. I may be making a stop by the bookstore to pick up a copy.

I plan on reading it, but not now. It's quite rare some one at my work place would even know of that book.

I have read it. It's a book on personal combat. If you're a fencer or something similar, it's a great read. Also good if you're just curious as to what made Musashi so incredible. If you want to see how its tactics look when applied, I recommend watching the film Yojimbo.

Not really. Hagakure is. Five Rings is just about combat. Musashi wasn't even a samurai, he was a ronin.

Lol yeah, it was also near Fort Knox in Kentucky. I expected to see a lot of soldiers eat in there but the day I was reading "The Art of War" no soldiers walked in. Instead there was an intelligent guy who looked the oppossite of a soldier who approached me.

Ronin fit under the Samurai category (they were just masterless Samurai). Sort of like how Knights fit under the Men-at-arms category (not totally similar, I know, but it is close enough).

I was going to suggest this, but was evidently beaten to it. I'd also suggest the memoirs of any Wehrmacht officer ~ land, air and sea.

Hm. Interesting question. I haven't been able to read any strategic books as of yet (caught up on N. Machiavelli's "The Prince"). Any suggestions would be helpful.

Machiavelli's "The Prince" is a good read, near the end Machiavelli offered some sound strategic advice.

This, although I'd rather put my money on von Clausewitz.

Achtung Panzer yes, but I would not advise either Lost Victories or Panzer General (Guderian's memoirs) as a strategy/tactics book because a lot of it is just memoirs of what they did during the war. By far the best German memoirs are that of Hans von Luck, "Panzer Commander", incredible book.

I read a version of Sun Tzu that had the entire old version and then a revised version that instructed you how to fight terrorism...

True. I was merely suggesting that valuable pieces of information might be within said memoirs.
