How did you get into NationStates? (How did you find it?)

My friend from a discord server (Oshibe) randomly posted his nation's info book in the announcements channel in his server. it looked really interested in it, so i made an account and started playing.

I got into a phase where I kinda just wanted to simulate ruling a country, so I went looking for games that were kind of like HOI4 but more on the political aspects and less on the war aspects. I found NS and got really interested in the storytelling aspects of how everyone is able to share their creations with each other. The community and different walks of life all in one universe interacting with each other got me hooked.

I was reading up on micronations, like Sealand, Ladonia and Valtio. That lead me to "nations" that only exist online, which lead me to NationStates and I was like, "sure let's go".

Well, it's quite the complicated story.

I was watching this YouTube video about geography or something, and I was scrolling down the comment section. I saw someone write "looks like someone's been playing nationstates." I hadn't heard of the game before, but it sounded interesting so I typed it in. And voila, I was instantly hooked.

I went to NS maybe about 4 years ago (on a different nation). Back then I watched a lot of mapper videos (think alternative history of Europe/Asia/world) so I decided to research more about the mapper community, that's when I found Nationstates.

My friend, New Aldova, (family-friend), told me to start playing this game since her region, [region]The Union of Rightwing Nations[/nation], needed a larger population of nations.

And she was like, my best friend. So I joined. And then, much like Anatoliyanskiy, I would describe myself as someone who "instantly got hooked" as well.

Unlike her, I figured out this game pretty fast.

combination of things, sciffy alternative and alien cultures, the micro-nations thing was going on, and not about some of the crazy stuff now.
don't remember where i linked in from, but i think it may have been a micro-nation web ring that existed back in the previous century before the world ended.

anyway, wanted to play the kind of world i'd like without the real risks of real world politics.

I joined this website 6 years ago, so I can't really say for sure what made me want to join but I've always been interested in how countries operated and was probably wanting to create one in my own image and google showed me the way. Thank you to the Holy God of Google.

I increasingly don't remember. Something to do with the show How to Start Your Own Country and bored teenage me thinking that sounded cool. I recall being on livejournal a whole lot at the time so it may have been that as well.

I was looking up searches like "how to run a country" when I was bored whilst doing homework, and then NationStates popped up. I also thought it would be funny to act like a 12 year old which obviously backfired.

I stopped playing around December 2019 until the Drewpocolypse happened which was a fresh reminder that my nation CTE'd.
