It wasn't. I've only heard of that as a pie in the sky possibility at some point, it's just that the series and fans are so resistant to change that it amuses me to think about.

I would actually love to see NASCAR bring back the OEM bodies and engines so manufacturers would have to be bothered to build performance cars instead of the million 'hybrid' crossovers that are taking over the road

Bold of you to assume that NASCAR wouldn't then be full of hybrid crossovers.

I guess my quip about hybrid wasn't completely wide of the mark.
tl/dr the new car could go hybrid or electric.

I don't mind electric race cars to be honest, fast is fast. But 30 cars whispering in a pack at a super speedway would seem...weird.

I hate silhouette racing and not fond of paved ovals, but to NASCAR's credit, it's really the only series out there that can be considered 'competitive'. Even when Jimmy Johnson was racking up championships any given race could have been won by any of at least ten drivers by the last lap. Compared to a similar run by Lewis Hamilton means that the race could be won by a Benz, a Red Bull...maybe a Ferrari. But probably Lewis.

Finding parity and close finishes is a tricky proposition. Though IMSA GT seems to be doing a great job with very different cars all based on street machines.

Oh hey, I was bored and trying to find something to watch and checked the Motor Trend app and they're in the middle of a live Australian Supercars race, and it's not at Bathurst!

I know jack about this series ultimately. I know they use to be silhouette racers, perhaps still are. As far as I can tell it's just Holdens and Mustangs. Man the numbers are small on these cars. Okay, battle for third is between energy drinks. Monster vs Red Bull.

I needed a racing fix.

Edit: Nope, its a battle for supremacy. The first and second place cars were out of pit order. It's Monster Energy vs Red Bull for the greatest of...this afternoon in Australia. Looks like Monster Mustang.

Penske and Porsche are going to mount a Daytona Hybrid (confusing naming, it's a car that qualifies for IMSA and ACO races) car, Ferrari is going to campaign a Le Mans Hypercar. Time for a remake of Steve McQueen's Le Mans...
