I want to make a game

Postby Untecna » Wed Feb 10, 2021 10:43 am

So...

Like most people out there, making a game sounds cool. I don't know where to start though, any tips?

I'll start with a few questions:

What platform should I use to develop the game?
What genre should the game be?
Lootboxes, yes or no?
What platform should the game be released on?
How do I decide if it's good or not?

I may not be an expert on them, but I feel like I know about way too many obscure video/audio formats.

a few things.

Do you have a design document.
Do you have nowledge of programming or someone willing to do so
do you have knowledge of 3D modelling/art design or someone willing to do so
do you have knowledge of game engines or osmeone willing to assist

Stick to the PC, Dev lisences for consoles are monstrous.
lootboxes are a AAA thing

Hi, I was in your shoes, too. But the idea in my head required an AAA studio with several hundred employees. So I immediately realized that alone, or in a small team, you can make a pretty good game for smartphones. If you really want to do this seriously, it would be fantastic if you can make a system of skins that people can sell as on skincashier.com, like CS:GO and Dota 2 users. Loot boxes will also help you make a profit because in the initial stages, you will earn very little, and this will help you get started on your journey.

Not necessarily. You can use RPGmaker or Unity.

Making a game does sound cool, which is why I am already heavily involved in a project to make one. You gotta have Discord to join but we're always looking for artists, programmers and people who know how to use Unity.

Apart from that, the other thing I would point out is that it helps to have an idea of what the game you're planning is. For example, I've had living in my head rent free for a little while an idea about a pike&shot siege puzzle game, but if I ever did go and pursue that then having that start would be critical.

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. i think you can get a nintendo switch and grab a copy of Game Builder Garage and it costs $29.99. However, there are more cheaper solutions to make your own game, but i prefer Game Builder Garage if you have a Switch.

For starters, you might want to use platforms such as Scratch. They have tutorials for coding games.

If you would like more detailed and advanced game creation platforms, I would suggest using Unity or Steam.

Alternatively, if you are interested in developing and creating a Roblox game, you can do so via Roblox Studio.

Download unity and search up some tutorials. It’s easy when you learn how it all works.

Good luck!

I tried to make a game through RPG Maker a few years back and while the game concept itself is one I liked, in the end it became too big a project for me to cover alone (and started using up a lot of money) and in the end had to be abandoned.

On lootboxes: NO. If you make a game with lootboxes in it, I will make it my life's mission to hunt you down. (I'm also hoping that new legislation will make it harder for games companies to stop scamming players via such a function.)

Same for me, just my Parliament Announced a New Law to Impose a Ban on Lootboxes, making it Harder for Video Game Companies (like Epic Games) to scam Consumers, or Gamers while in-game, except the New Law only Exempts Loot Boxes that uses only In-Game Currency instead of Real-Life Currencies and Online Payment Methods.

RPGMaker if you have limited experience. It isn't simple to learn, but you can get the basic's down in a week if you keep at it and making assets with pixel art is the best compromise between good and attainable for a new dev.
What genre should the game be?

If you take the above advice, an RPG.
Lootboxes, yes or no?

No one buys lootboxes from a small indie dev. The answer is no regardless though.
What platform should the game be released on?

Steam.
How do I decide if it's good or not?

If it's your first game, it won't be, no one's ever really is unless you have developer-adjacent experience. But that's art, ya know? Always be looking to improve and take your criticism constructively.

Creating my own game is my dream. To do this, I went to study as a programmer, and I'm still finishing my last year, I found a part-time job in a cool company that develops games. And recently, my guys and I came across flip knife cs go at work, where you can find cool skins for your characters in video games. Take it and use it!

What platform should I use to develop the game?

Maybe the Unreal Engine, it is very innovating and you can learn a lot by using it
What genre should the game be?

How about an third-person stealth game with a morality system
Lootboxes, yes or no?

I'll leave it up to you
What platform should the game be released on?

Playstation 4 and/or Playstation 5
How do I decide if it's good or not?

leave it to the players

Still surprised I'm getting responses.

Welp, I don't really have that much interest anymore, but I suppose I have some ideas for something...

Edit: That being a literal game... to test out rockets. Inspired by Rocket Tester on Roblox.

yay

I have never made a game, but here is a useful tip; keep your expectations reasonable. If you set out to have a triple A game on your first attempt, you are going to be disappointed at the final product and yourself, which would KILL your motivation. Just stay humble and calm about it, and take pride in your work, even if it isn't to your highest standards.

If you want to make a game and are short on coding expertise, I recommend going the route I did with Hosted Games.

https://www.choiceofgames.com/category/user-made-games/

Interactive fiction is a bit of a wonky genre to market, since it exists at the crossroads of video game and novel. But there's a decent-sized audience out there, and it can be pretty profitable. Plus, the coding language is simple and there's a good community of beta testers. The company publishes anything that hits the minimum word length (although, word to the wise, write at least 100,000 words unless you're allergic to money. Short games almost always do poorly) and isn't grossly offensive.

Of my two games published with the company, my first, Nuclear Powered Toaster (which was sci-fi, not the most popular IF genre, and also had fixed main characters, a major no-no over there) has made me less than $500 for my royalty cut in three years. But my second, The Parenting Simulator, has earned me over $9,500 in 23 months, and keeps on pulling down about $200 a month even now. But as much as the money, it's also worth it because of how fulfilling it is to have people out there enjoying your stuff. Seeing someone say in a Google Play review that they're using your app to help them learn English is pretty awesome. All it took was 13 months or so writing in the wee hours before work and I ended up with someone that provides a steady income stream and a lot of personal fulfillment.

And if you're not much of a writer, you can also pair with someone who is and handle the coding side. Several Hosted Games titles have released from pairings like that and done pretty well. Of course, it makes the author royalty portion you get pretty small when you split it with someone else, but the ones on the highest end still earn enough to make it worthwhile.
