What is a good drawing platform for military?

Postby New Jeromia » Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:06 pm

Recently, I've wanted to start developing my nation's military. I'd like to do it completely from scratch, and I'd like to draw a lot of it, including soldiers, guns, planes, you name it. I see a lot of storefronts with images like this (not mine, belongs to Mikaylski & Aviram Armaments)

Looks pretty good, right? There's a ton of similar art on here, but I can't seem to find a good platform to draw on. I'm usually on a MacBook Air, and I've tried GIMP, which for some reason is really laggy. I've had success with it in the past, drawing my nation's maps, but it doesn't do good with precise measurements, which I'd need if I'm drawing a vehicle or gun. I could probably use it for a soldier or something else more vague, but like I said, I don't enjoy using it due to poor performance.

What I'd like is a program where I can make all sorts of art, with precise measurements so it doesn't look sloppy. Keep in mind, it would have to be compatible with MacOS. I appreciate any help y'all give!

Moderators, feel free to move this, I'm not sure if it's in the right place.

New Jeromia is the most free nation in the world!

New Jeromia is a large nation which takes up most of the Jeromian Peninsula. This nation follows my IRL views mostly, and is modeled after the real life countries of the US, Japan, South Korea, and probably France too.

This is a micro nation I made: Komejo Zikorzo
My other nation (made to oppress people): Nickodia

Perhaps you are looking for 2D drawing programs specifically. Maybe look for CAD programs? But you could try Blender, if you don't mind learning about 3D modeling. You can model over reference drawings if necessary to get started. Blender allows you to create 3D objects with precise measurements. Once you have a model you can adjust it to the exact measurements you want. You can set up cameras for whatever lighting you want. You can take snapshots from various angles and save them as BMP or PNG files, for example. Also you can move the object around to get the position you want. Then you could use that as your reference for your final drawing. If you learn about materials and texture mapping you could create everything in Blender and just take a snapshot to get your finished 2D image.

There are lots of free Blender models online, and many have basically a "do whatever you want" license. Just look at the license terms because sometimes they request you at least mention who created the model. You can start with a free model and modify it to make your own model.

I'm not an artist but I've made many 2D images this way, in different poses and lighting, using the same 3D model each time. It's a little complicated to get started but there are many tutorials on YouTube. Blender is free. See Blender.org for details.

Maybe this is a lot more than you need or want. If you do find a good 2D drawing program where you can make exact measurements, please post about it. Good luck!

So I've been browsing online and I kept seeing these images using "http://pimpmygun.doctornoob.com/". Does anyone know how to get this, or a similar program working in 2021? This would fit the bill for some of what I need, and I think for vehicles I will use GIMP, which seems to be running smoother after an update.

Any help would be appreciated, I've seen what the program can do and it would be really cool to have it working. Thanks.

Pimp My Gun was an old browser app. If you have Flash Player installed you can use it, although Flash Player is dead now due to inherent security issues.

Ruffle flash emulator supposedly will be able to run it in a few months. That's the only way I know of to run it.
