While my primary era of listening to and enjoying music is the 60s-80s myself, you have to be careful making comments like these implying that ALL music back then was good - there was plenty of crap back then too, but a lot of it has been forgotten about because we all collectively seemed to agree it was unremarkable and/or sucked. For example, the charts of 1980-1982 in particular were full of mediocre, interchangeable adult contemporary ballads that are now forgotten about by radio stations and don't at all fit in with the stereotypical glitter-hairspray-and-synthesizers perception of 80s music.
I've listened to a ton of good music in my day, but it's very hard for me to pick one ultimate, overarching "best" or "all-time favorite" song. Granted, there are going to be groups of songs I really get into and listen to and enjoy a lot for a period of time, but that's about it. I can narrow down a favorite year for music (1983) and a couple of favorite genres (new wave and 70s-80s hard rock), but not one particular favorite song.
One of the songs that's been a favorite of mine the longest and made the most profound impact on me personally would be "Here I Go Again" (1987) by Whitesnake. I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard that song, at the age of 12. I mean, yes, it's just an 80s rock song. But growing up in an era of crappy pop like I did, hearing a song with actual power to it is what caused me really to get into rock and classic music in general and realize I actually didn't like most of the current crap on the radio, even the stuff I thought I liked at the time. And I think the fact of how long that song in particular has been a favorite of mine speaks for something.
