Coming up to the end of this year sooo...

I don't exactly have a top album in particular this year, but if had to pick one it would be Ohms - Deftones. Some interesting-looking albums this year that I hope to get to.

Top Song: A close one, but I'll admit Godzilla - Eminem ft. Juice Wrld was the one that caught my attention most. I think there's probably better songs from this year, but let me be honest, this year was more about - for me - finding more music rather than cruisin' along and listening to new stuff. Maybe next year.

So here's my Top 50 albums list as of now:

1. Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
2. Around the Fur - Deftones
3. Symbolic - Death
4. Nimrod - Green Day
5. Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) - Wu Tang Clan
6. The Fat of the Land - The Prodigy
7. ...And Justice For All - Metallica
8. Innervisions - Stevie Wonder
9. Destroy Erase Improve - Meshuggah
10. Toxicity - System of a Down
11. Dirt - Alice in Chains
12. Songs for the Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age
13. From Mars to Sirius - Gojira
14. Dookie - Green Day
15. Spiderland - Slint
16. Lateralus - Tool
17. Здорово и вечно - Grazhdanskaya Oborona
18. Demanufacture - Fear Factory
19. Locust Abortion Technician - Butthole Surfers
20. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
21. Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
22. System of a Down - System of a Down
23. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
24. The Battle of Los Angeles - Rage Against the Machine
25. No Love Deep Web - Death Grips
26. Kid A - Radiohead
27. Smash - The Offspring
28. Nevermind - Nirvana
29. Exmilitary - Death Grips (not technically an album but whatever)
30. Peace Sells...but Who's Buying? - Megadeth
31. A Day At the Races - Queen
32. Ritual de lo Habitual - Jane's Addiction
33. ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ - Ministry
34. Steal This Album! - System of a Down
35. Illmatic - Nas
36. Rust in Peace - Megadeth
37. The Bends - Radiohead
38. Cowboys From Hell - Pantera
39. In Utero - Nirvana
40. All the Little Lights - Passenger
41. Far Beyond Driven - Pantera
42. Crowbar - Crowbar
43. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
44. Liquid Swords - GZA
45. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
46. Angst - KMFDM
47. Parklife - Blur
48. Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden
49. Evil Empire - Rage Against the Machine
50. Koяn - Koяn

On another note, what are our thoughts here on Mr Bungle's debut? It'd be a 5-star album for me if the transitions between songs weren't weren't so unbearable some of the time. It really does disrupt the flow of the album imo.

2020 was an exceptional year for me when it comes to new releases. I listened to like 3 new albums in the entire year. Out of those, my favorite was Brother Firetribe's fifth album, Feel the Burn, and my favorite song was the opener, I Salute You. But considering how much I love that band, that would probably be my favorite song regardless, favorite album probably but not certainly :p

48. Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden
49. Evil Empire - Rage Against the Machine
50. Koяn - Koяn

I don't have a Top 50 Albums list myself (the closest thing is Top 5 of All Time), but here's my breakdown of your list:
Death's Symbolic is 9th best of '95, ...And Justice for All is 4th of '88, Led Zeppelin's S/T is 7th of '69, Paranoid is 4th of '70, Rust in Peace is AOTY 1990, Peace Sells? and Pantera albums are good but not in my yearly top 10s, and the rest are a mixed bag of "not interested" and "gotta listen to at some point"

On a side note, Rage Against the Machine is the favorite band of Finland's current PM, Sanna Marin.

I can't stop listening to Face of Melinda by Opeth lately. That second half hits just right... Simply exquisite! I keep catching myself humming it when I'm alone.
Sorry, my factbooks are VERY barebones at the moment! I'm in the process of fleshing them out now.

Of all the stuff I've heard that has come out this year, https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/fievel-is-glauque/gods-trashmen-sent-to-right-the-mess/ is the best (God's Trashmen Sent to Right the Mess by Fievel Is Glauque).
It's lo-fi french jazz pop, only about 35 minutes, but has 20 songs. This combination leads to a balance of melodic ye-ye french singing paired with upbeat jazz sections with lively performances.

^^Actually only came across them very recently so that came as a surprise. Shall look into their music in the future. RIP.

On another notes, I had a listen to The King of Limbs today, and...well it's my favourite Radiohead album now. I don't really understand what problems there might be with it - it's probably one of their least acclaimed albums. That's understandable, but it gets criticised a lot for some reason. For me, it feels like it's joined Kid A and Amnesiac in mastering the blend of art rock, IDM, jazz, post-rock etc.

Listening to my first 2021 album (after mostly catching up on my massive list of music from 1965 to 1989 I went through), and its the new Wardruna album. Disappointed my favorite single isn't on the album, but it should be solid anyway, its Wardruna.

I listen to a lot of movie-ish country music for some reason, like Devil of the Town by Kenzo Almond.

No idea why. :)

Tbf music has become more and more compressed over time, some of which may become uncomfortable to listen to (see: loudness war). Of course this may not apply to all recent music but certainly a lot of the most popular songs would probably have a very compressed sound. That and overproduction are some of the biggest problems in music today imo. A lot of times I hear a song with potential but the production sounds terrible.

Today I listened to Muse - Simulation Theory and The Killers - Imploding The Mirage. I love both of those albums, but that's not all that interesting I suppose. What's more interesting is the prog marathon I did yesterday:

Area - Arbeit Macht Frei
Van Der Graaf Generator - Godbluff
Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
Celeste - Principe Di Un Giorno
Camel - Moonmadness
Premiata Formerai Marconi - Per Un Amico
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Anyone care to discuss any of those? :)

I want to talk about two albums from this year that I enjoyed a lot.

Nurture by Porter Robinson: Released back in April of this year, this is the 2nd album by Porter, 7 years after his debut Worlds, which was very popular with fans but a lot more mixed with critics. He would go on to create his trance side-project Virtual Self, with the debut EP from it being nominated for a Grammy Award for best dance recording, courtesy of the song Ghost Voices. This project is a culmination of all 3 eras we've seen from him so far, the glitchy synthpop from the debut, the fast drums and hard beats from Virtual Self and the new Nurture sound, notable for its greater implementation of piano (the guitar on Blossom was made using a guitar plug in for his piano, since he can't play guitar) and usage of voice changers to pitch up his voice, which sound surprisingly good. It's experimental but it all works so well together and really feels like nature in the comfort of your own home.

Escapades by Gaspard Augé: The debut solo release from Gaspard from back in June, it has a fresh new sound which still feels loosely like his group project Justice with Xavier De Rosnay. Reaching major success with their debut album Cross in 2007, Justice are a band that constantly refreshes their style with each release. From the prog-rock influences on Audio, Video, Disco to the more 80's electro on Woman, you can never see what comes next exactly. This release by Gaspard feels like an obscure sci-fi score which while some might find a little cheesy in places, I find easily listenable and groovy, even on repeats. If you like that kind of stuff, give it a go.
(P.S. Is it weird to like a 17 second instrumental intro so much that you want a 3 minute extended version so you can fall asleep to it? Yes? Oh well.)
