Perhaps it's more imitation film noir, but I would count Dark City.

The Third Man was indeed really quite good. I especially liked the Austrian setting.

And if you consider it Noir, I've always liked The Maltese Falcon.

Probably The Maltese Falcon, or (even though it's Neo-Noir) Chinatown.

Either Double Idemnity or The Maltese Falcon, probably the latter.

Do you think Sunset Blvd. could be classified as film noir? I know it frequently is, but I'm not sure.

Conserative Morality wrote:If The Usual Suspects counts...

It's certainly a neo-noir (as is Reservoir Dogs, although in a different way).

Maurepas wrote:Does Sin City count?

Without a doubt, it's noir in style, though its over-the-top action is rather contrary to the noir "feel". Noirs aren't exactly action films.

I personally wouldn't consider Casablanca a noir... It just just doesn't have that flavor to me... although noir classification is widely up to personl interpretation.

And I've never seen The Usual Suspects... Would any one else consider is noir/recommend it?

I like all of the noir spy movies in particular, but my overall favourite of the genre would have to be The Killing. As you said, M and Third Man are quite good also.

It's a romance/drama, albeit in black & and white and with smoking.

And I've never seen The Usual Suspects... Would any one else consider is noir/recommend it?

Yes. It is perhaps the most noir film made in recent times, next to my own selection of The Man Who Wasn't There.

I'll have to check that out too. And I shall pimp Strangers on a Train I used to not really consider it noir, but on a re-watch I'm willing it let it in as noir. It is also very good.

"The primary moods of classic film noir were melancholy, alienation, bleakness, disillusionment, disenchantment, pessimism, [moral] ambiguity, moral corruption, evil, guilt, desperation and paranoia."

Sorry for the slight gravedig but it seemed preferable to starting a new thread...

I watched The Brick last night, an excellent little neo-noir. It has all the essentials of a film-noir but replaces a city like Los Angeles with a high school. Deinitely worth watching.
