Fortnite is also popular for its open-endedness as well... It is so popular as a result of building, which is unique as a combat mechanic in comparison to other games and enables a different battle every time. I think you are also disregarding the Fortnite Creative mode, where users have created thousands of challenges and builds. I do agree that the games really don't compare to each other well though.

Also Fortnite: StW, which predates Fortnite Battle Royale by some months.
