I don't know if I'm just lucky or what, but I went to Sardinia as Haesteinn and IMMEDIATELY punched EVERYONE so I could form Tyrhennia (that's spelled correctly, btw, that name is so perfectly set up for Norse mythology). I imagine Africa probably wouldn't have been a problem even if the Aghlabid king hadn't immediately died, but I expected to have at least some difficulty with Italy and the Byzantines. I had more trouble in my very first war, with France for Normandy, than I did fighting the Byzantines.

I don't know why I'm so bad at being mindful about screenshots these days, I should have done this before posting. Here's what I have and you can see ALL of the changes I've made to the title.

In COMPLETE spite of renaming Baleo-Tyrrhenia to Tyrhennia, I'm going to convert to Orthodox and will probably make a new religion based on Norsodoxy down the line. And I don't have much more of a goal beyond forming an empire of Tyrhennia.

*surprisingly genuine gasp* So I was perusing my game, planning out my long term goals and I discovered something: All the research I tried to do for the start of my run is fucking wrong. I should be mad about this, I don't know why this information hasn't made it to the internet, but I'm too excited to be bothered by this anymore: The Sicilian culture is on the map. In 887. The un-updated internet told me it would emerge ~950. Converting to or hybridizing with Sicilian has been one of the biggest pulls of this run, I've wanted it to be just as iconic as the Kingdom of Tyrhennia title.

Also, I've locked in some of my religious plans, I'm definitely gonna make a faith based off of Orthodox, I don't want to be anti-Christian in this run so I'm going to use the new Rite tenet. And Astrology is going to be the no-brainer connection for my maritime Mediterranean empire. Dunno what I want my third slot to be though, I'm keeping myself open to suggestion on that one. I want to stay plausibly Christian-y for this slot, but I could definitely be swayed if a tenet feels good RP-wise. I was actually considering the brand new Megalith Construction (which I was surprised to learn is compatible with Christian faiths), but sadly my demesne isn't quite suitable to make the best use for it. So many hills and mountains in the empire I envision, but my capital duchies can't do the megalith duchy buildings.

Fuck it, if it's just going to be me talking to myself, then so be it. Today was a day of unintended consequences in my Tyrhennia run:

I ended up in a war with the Papal States when I conquered one of the southern Italian micro-states. The Pope was pushing the claim of some nobody. My first reaction was dread. But when they sent armies my way that were equal in size to my own, I clobbered them. No matter how many mercenaries they hired, they never grouped up properly to deal with me. It was so easy to win the war. And in period of one in-game day's time, I decided to retaliate. It was always going to be a long-term goal to conquer Rome, and eventually all of Romagna, but this opportunity was too good to ignore. They were out of men, they were out of money, and their god had abandoned them. And I continued to declare war off of truce cooldown. The Papal States no longer exist and Rome is now an thriving jewel of my demesne.

Onto a mistake of my own making, Haesteinn finally died, leaving me with Ragnar. Ragnar the Norseman. He never converted to Norman. And I never converted any provinces to Norman. I was upset because my plans for Norman-Sicilian culture were basically dead in the water. During my theory-crafting about what I was going to next, I decided to throw the old plan in the dumpster. The new plan has even grander plans. Norse will integrate with Sicilian. And then I'll hybridize again. With Greek. I'm going to make the most terrifying army the world has even seen. Varangian Veterans are already one of the best units in the game. Imagine how strong they'll be when I introduce Roman battle tactics. I won't need levies at all. I'm going to be unstoppable.

Y'know, the reason I generally don't play the marriage game in CK games is because whenever I do play the game, the people I kingmake turn into colossal fuck-ups who need more attention than literal real-life babies. And here we have it. Odyseiad (probably should've added another s but it's too late the fix that now) is a culture of Varangian Veterans AND Cataphracts. This culture SLAYS. In terms of direct combat stats, I'm basically done but when I make it to the next age I'm definitely going to add Martial Admiration. No idea what I'm going to choose if I make it to the final era.
