Yemen, since everywhere else is dangerous and probably will have rampaging Turks, Crusaders, or the Byz going through it. Yemen is nice and safe at the bottom of Arabia.

I wonder if they'll fix the Crusader AI too. I've been playing a recent run and the AI allies shooting themselves in the foot is only slightly more annoying than the Northern Adventurers who keep attacking me once every five years. At least the latter is by design and I can turn it off.

Bedouin Arabia, I think it may perhaps be some latent orientalism, but I really like the trope and the aesthetic it usually carries of warrior-tribesmen from the desert.

I blame Dune and Frank Herbert.

Currently playing as Dithmarschen, and just finished a 10 year coalition war ending in 1.8 mil combined deaths. It was essentially France, Austria and the HRE against me, Poland-Lithuania, Russia and Spain. Ended with a friendly victory, but i'm completely ragged now. Economy and manpower are in the hole, but at least the war reps and being able to deactivate forts will keep me from going bankrupt.

Could take economic and/or admin ideas to reduce the interest from your loans. If you stack that, it can be be pretty strong. Though if you're playing Dithmarschen I suspect that you're already doing economic ideas for that -20% development cost.

I might be planning on a Dutch-Danish (but speaking in something like Old Norse) culture taking over a Crusader State in Jerusalem based on an old worldbuilding project/CK2 game I had a while ago. This actually might make it really happen lmao

I'm actually being serious about my Cathar Hiberno-Norse-Romano Afghanistan thing, btw. Irish Vikings restoring Rome, mending the Great Schism as Cathars, banishing the Muslims out of the Holy Land and Mesopotamia, and going on to fulfill Alexander the Great's legacy by expanding their empire into Afghanistan.

Historical focuses off in HOI4 has created some really strange bedfellows in war. Wilhelm II's annoying overpowered monarchist Germany, Leon Blum's fiercely mediocre Democratic France and much of eastern Europe in various flavors of fascism are up against mostly historical Italy, Oswald Mosley's modern real-life Britain British Empire (sans every commonwealth nation except British Malaya) and the Soviets. Japan became the unaligned Shogunate really early on and has done precisely fuck all since, which is a relief to me, the USA. I do want to fight them at some point to take some Pacific islands and maybe force them to become Democratic, but not yet.
It's been several years and I'm still the Paradox Thread's Self-Appointed Court Chaplain. No one's ever asked but I thought you should know.

decided to go all-out for the aftergame on my latest HOI3 campaign as the USSR

The year is 1946 and the world stands divided.

THE STATE OF THE WORLD

In the east, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics under Joseph Stalin has expanded its reach from Lyon in the west to Sapporo in the East. Both Germany and Japan stand divided on North and South while Italy has fallen entirely to the Red Army. France is divided upon the East and West, with the eastern French People's Republic at odds with the western French Fourth Republic. Iran is split upon northern and southern lines. In all but name, the world is divided in half.

The Soviet Union bore the brunt of the humanitarian costs of the Second World War. After Berlin fell in November of 1944 and Rome a few short months after that the Red Army seemed unstoppable until it met its match in the snowfields and mountains of northern Japan. Stalin seems poised to split Korea and China the way he did Japan, Iran, Germany, and France, and the Allies can do little but watch.

The United States was caught off-guard by the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 and was on the backfoot in the early years of the war. The landings in Holland and Normandy in the waning years of the Nazi regime prevented Stalin from completely dominating Europe, but the millions lost in Japan have left a scar on the American psyche that is bound to stay for years. President Harry S. Truman has the wartime presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt still fresh in the public's mind and is struggling to live up to the successes of his predecessor.

Clement Atlee stands at the helm of an Empire in decline. Native revolts rock allied nations such as the Netherlands and France while the unpopular creation of an Italian royal government-in-exile in Somalia in late 1945 has rocked the boat significantly. Africa, especially Egypt, is ready to ignite at the flick of a trigger. The old imperial order is dying and a new order of uncertain origin springs to the forefront.

THE DEFEATED POWERS

JAPAN

The development of the atomic bomb in 1945 and its detonation in the Trinity demonstration forced Japan's hand as Hokkaido and northern Tohoku fell to the Soviet Union. The rest of the country was surrendered to the United States, United Kingdom, and Republic of China, although the lattermost's occupational gains were waived as the Chinese Civil War broke out once again in late 1945. Japan, southern Korea, Taiwan, and the Pacific holdings remain occupied by the United States. Northern Hokkaido, North Korea, the Kurils, Sakhalin, and the former Manchukuo and Mengjiang are occupied by the Soviet Union with the puppet Japanese Republic occupying southern Hokkaido and northern Tohoku.

Emperor Hirohito abdicated in 1945 as the war drew to its end and his brother, Hitachi, took the throne in wake of his abdication. Hitachi remains, on paper, the Emperor of Japan but his power is greatly diminished under the American occupation and not recognized at all by North Japan and the Soviet Union.

GERMANY

The former Reich was dismantled and bombed into submission by the Allies and Soviet Union. While initially expected to win the war after the door was crashed in in 1941, by 1943 the war had turned decidedly against the Germans and in 1944 the war ended in November with the capture of Berlin. The Reich was split on north and south -- the Federal Republic of Germany in the north, established in 1945, and the German Democratic Republic in the south, established in late 1945. The former Nazi leadership was tried on crimes against humanity and most were found guilty; the most impressive trial was that of Adolf Hitler, who ranted for hours before sitting down defeated as his verdict was read. He remains in prison in the Soviet Union and is expected to be executed later this year.

North Germany was created out of the American, British, and West French occupation zones and East Germany was created by the Soviet occupation forces. The Berlin Exclave remains a thorn in the Soviet side but no action has been taken against it... yet.

ITALY

Italy being Europe's "soft underbelly" was decidedly disproven after Husky's failure in 1943. In a shocking victory the Italian forces not only kicked Allied forces out of southern Italy but gave the United States a particularly bloody nose; this only delayed the inevitable, however. The Socialist Republic of Italy was established out of Italy's former territory in Europe, Libya was divided by West France and the UK, and East Africa was absorbed mostly by the UK -- a government in exile made of the former King was formed on January 1, 1946, in Somalia. Despite the existence of the Kingdom of Italy in Somalia most countries recognize the Socialist Republic of Italy.
