The key to playing 4 is simple. Pause often and judiciously. Don't try and micromanage unpaused. Pause, think, plan, micro -> execute -> repeat.3 is just ORBAT simulator. Like if you don't have a 1st Jan 1936 save as the Soviets where you fixed their ORBAT you're doing it wrong.
3 was horrible for me. It was literally a mountain of boring administrative work and me constantly going: I just need to finish this bit and than I'll get to the game. And than another thing would come along. And another. And than I realized THAT WAS THE GAME. And that was it for me.
A game of HoI3 is spending hours reorganising the whole military then hitting unpause. After that is becomes Army Supply Management the Game.
