Worst albums by your favourite bands/artists?

Postby Esheaun Stroakuss » Mon Jul 22, 2019 4:43 am

No one's perfect, not even our favourite musicians. What are the worst albums made by your favourite bands/artists? (obligatory YMMV)

To get the ball rolling: The Beatles - Let It Be. Clearly the band should have taken a break because these songs are just woefully underdeveloped.

My favourite band is Rammstein and I'm definitely in the "There's no such thing as a bad Rammstein album" camp.

However my least favourite album by them is Liebe ist für alle da which is by no means a bad album, and actually contains several of my favourite tracks but it's just the one that happens to have more songs that I skip over than any other album whereas with most of their other albums as soon as I hear one song, I have to listen to the whole album.

I feel the same way about my favorite band (also German), Blind Guardian.

That said, their weakest album to me is easily the sophomore effort Follow The Blind. Although there are bona-fide classics such as "Valhalla" and "Banish From Sanctuary" present, the middle of the album contains a little too much wannabe-thrash filler.

The band were keen to experiment and move on from their Speed Metal roots but hadn't yet discovered their trademarked sound, which produced some scattered and mixed results that reflected their listening habits at the time (Exodus, Forbidden, early Metallica) and the time-pressure of being their first release on a bigger label.

Since I listen to a fair amount of bands and artists I'm going to pick three at random (because I can't think of anyone else) and what I think their worst or least best album is:

  • Other than the title track, which still kind of rocks even today, WWIII by KMFDM (who are also German to carry this trend on) clearly should've stayed on the drawing board. Most of the songs are a slog to listen to, it lacks the fury of their earlier political output and most of it just sounds incredibly dated back to 2003 when it was first released (although one could argue that Stars and Stripes is now relevant again).
  • While I wouldn't say it's the worst because of its musical content, as it's not that great but nothing to get riled up about, Filth Pig by Ministry was clearly where they started to nosedive in quality and thus I consider it to be their worst album. While I didn't mind the new sludgey direction, almost all of it came across as forgettable, "in one ear, out the other" and "all the tracks blend together but not in the best way".
  • Kyuss' last album, ...And the Circus Leaves Town. Other than the first two songs, the absolute behemoth that is Spaceship Landing and the second hidden track Day One (the first hidden track being a brief interlude that clearly could've been left out), almost all of it suffers from the same problem Filth Pig did in that it's just bland and forgettable. Especially since it was their last full-length album before they broke up, which meant it was a disappointing end to a great band.
  • The 2015 Eurovision Song Contest is an honorable mention here due to it being the weakest contest for quite some time (with only about five or six entries I didn't dislike or hate) but, other than a compilation CD, I'm not sure how I could tie it into this thread.

Magane - Mortes Saltantes
It's a good album buts it's not as good as their other one Beginning at the End so it would be there worst album. Also St. Anger by Metallica

I love her to death but IMO, Tori Amos’s “American Doll Posse” is her worst album to date. She redeemed herself after however.

Super Collider by Megadeth

A boring album compared to the one before it
there's nothing wrong with trying something new but the album was a half-assed attempt at a hard rock album that not even the hardcore fans could get into

A similar thing happened with the album Risk but Risk still had some songs that would become iconic
Super Collider didn't get any iconic song status

Cardiacs - Heaven Born and Ever Bright: Even the weakest Cardiacs are still good, but this is probably the one I find least interesting despite some great songs.
NoMeansNo - All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt: A very underwhelming final album, especially given how much the one before ruled. It's fun, and the drumming is absolutely insane, but it feels like the most trivial thing they did.
They Might Be Giants - The Spine: I don't know, man. This album just feels so dreary and bland. I love Experimental Film, and there's some other alright stuff here, but... At least Mink Car was trying to do some weird stuff, even if it kinda failed.

I forgot about "At War with Satan" by my favorite band Venom. I loved the albums "Black Metal", "Welcome to hell". I also like a lot their newer albums like "Metal Black " and "Cast in Stone ". However, I was disappointed when I listened to "At War with Satan", not what I expected, It was not nearly as heavy and good as "Black Metal" or "Welcome to hell". Their older stuff I love and I did not love that album even though it is one of their older ones. I may need to give it another listen and I might change my mind.

Some will be aware of my challenge of finding the original cut of Madonna’s Crazy for You on CD. The 1991 CD release was a slightly shorter remaster, while the original cut could only be found, as far as I am aware, on the official soundtrack album for the Vision Quest movie from 1985.

Of course, my interest in Madonna currently ends around 1990. I know that Madonna was clearly embracing generic electronic pop by the end of the 1990s.

I consider Boy to be one of their best albums. Have you listened to all their albums? Because if so, I have a hard time wrapping my head around how you think it's worse than their later albums. I don't even think it's their worst album from the 1980s. That honour would go to October (their second album).

Rush--Caress of Steel is probably the worst album they did. Still had a good song or two, such as Bastille Day, but otherwise they kind of veered off of their typical style too much.

It's not a bad album, just not as interesting or memorable as their later works.

I'm not a big Otep fan (I like Atavist and maybe some of her older stuff) but Kult 45 is probably the worst album from a band that has made music that I enjoy.
