I'm just going to pretend this edition hasn't happened for now tbh. Don't play that often with people all lawyered up on the rules anyway, and care far more about the story than power gaming.

And this is a comprehensively stupid change.

Indeed. Guess GW gotta sell those close combat primaris some way. Buffing melee skyhigh seems a n entirely reasonable change to make to that end. /s

When the new edition was announced, my first thought was 'hopefully they scrapped Stratagems and Command Points'. Then after they announced increasing Command Points, my thought was 'hopefully there is a game mode without them'. Then they announced this Command Phase nightmare, and the desiccation of my optimism was complete.

Yeah, pretty much the same for me. I still held some hope when they turned out to be tied to the game size instead of army conposition though. But GW is continuing on turning core parts of the game and the army books into stratagems, so...

...they can use those command points without me.

Not quite as bad as the Orks perhaps, but I played my diy chapter with Iron Hands rules for a loong time. I already knew the pain you speak of my fungal friend.

That seems to be gone, atleast based on the information available so far.

https://www.belloflostsouls.net/2020/06 ... quiem.html

To summarise, overwatch was an automatic thing for ... well, since for ever. Came from the simple assumption that a man with a gun seeing an angry man with an axe charging him might attempt to shoot him.

Now however, the overwatch has been altered from this automatic response to a stratagem, requiring a command point (which are always limited) to take action. The card with this stratagem strictly defines it as shooting with hitting on 6s, no modifiers allowed. Oh, and because of this, it can only be used once per turn.

Not only is this silly in a way that will make the battles feel less realistic (behold such beauties as this to see it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbDHVAt3yzk ), but it's also a gigantic hammer blow to shooting armies. Hell, the Tau even had entire strategic builds based on getting charged and then decimating on overwatch (since they hit on 5s and 6s). An entirely unrealistic and plain silly change.

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. Overwatch was changed from an action you could take with any units that were charged to take potshots at the enemy as they closed in, to a stratagem (an absolutely cursed mechanic which was introduced in the current edition and which they’re unfortunately doubling down on in the next one) which means that overwatching now not only costs a limited resource (command points) to use, it can now only be done once a turn and only with a single unit (some elite units will apparently retain the ability as it was before, but the absolute majority of units won’t). This combined with changes to deployement and reinforcement rule changes will force people to either play melee oriented (a play style which I personally hate for example. When I want to bash heads I play fantasy, not 40k) or gimp themselves.

Their release style soured me somewhat on Necromunda as well, but at it’s core it still is a very fun game. Wouldn’t hurt to start again, especially if the girls are getting new toys.

I've only recently been getting into it, finally starting to get things painted (so much terrain to assemble with the Dark Uprising set!), I feel like as a game I'll enjoy it more, and the new Escher models look kickass. Really looking forward to getting them!

Was having fun learning about my Ork friend's army and his lore and it actually inspired me to make my own warband
It's a deathskulls warband with a lot of Mekboyz and led by a Mek Boss. I decided to focus more on the deathskulls improving on their looted equipment than the looting itself because it kinda bores me that they get a reputation for being kleptomaniacs who loot everything and toss it in piles only to forget about them.

I'll tell you more about them when I get some solid writing done, but I am feeling inspired because the best part of 40k fan creations is that no matter how bad they are they can only improve.

I love Deathskulls, they are my most successful (and best painted) army. Thinking up backstories for armies is also one of my favourite pastimes, and Orks have plenty of room for wacky lore that can also be portrayed on the models.

To be honest having not REALLY played since 2nd edt and early third, the whole everyone getting a free overwatch shot was a bit... odd as I was so used to it being one of your choices for the action phase, ie shoot, fight or overwatch. Choosing when to use it was part of the strategy ie if the enemy had a bunch of assault units moving up in cover was it better to take the hard shots if you could in your turn or wait and see if they would move out of cover to charge at which point you could pummel them.
My initial thought on the newer overwatch thing was that it was a bit cheap allowing shooting units to fire twice but I can see how it makes sense and the change they are making now really seems a bit weird and maybe intended to drive folks into the crusade rules where units can earn the ability to do it for free.

Got some basic work done on my Deathskullz warband. I really like how my warboss turned out, need to make a Mad Dok to lead the Painboyz but that will come eventually.

Warboss: Gutzthresha Da Deff Mek (Mek Boss)
Was blown apart by an Iron Warriors artillery piece but stitched back together by his Mad Dok and received significant modifications taken from looted tanks including the prized Fell Blade. He looks more machine than Ork but he is still bigger than you gitz and he’ll krump ya if you mock him.

The Warband not only loots every piece of useful equipment and scrap but the Mekboyz tinker with it and have managed to create even deadlier additions to the warband. No loot is put to waste unless you count what gets ruined by malfunctions.

Dedicated to Mork
Decent sized warband sometimes runs a little short on new blood but manages to pick up numbers without issue. Even with experienced Mekboyz accidents do happen not to mention the other hazards of being an Ork.
Boyz are normal sized but the modifications from the Painboyz makes some appear bigger than they are. The Nobz are huge however, they’re the ones that survived the malfunctions and the Painboyz.
Have significantly more Mekboyz than the average warband, if it’s loot its fair game and with the luck of the Deathskullz there’s more than enough loot to satisfy a WAAAAAAAAGH!!! ‘s worth of Mekboyz.
Looted a near perfect condition Fell Blade that somehow survived the Horus Heresy, it was tinkered with and made Orkier but some parts went to rebuilding the Warboss and now its become the boss’ own war machine.
Rival to most Bad Moons warbands over who has the biggest and shootiest shootas and orkiest loot.
