But you just got here!

FUN FACT: Heresy was also a classic hardcore band, which implies that hardcore fans shouldn't mind a little bit of Heresy at all.

A fellow Dutchman, I see! I'm only here for the geekery, to be honest. WH40K is pretty much a thing that I follow without playing it myself. I kinda like the over-the-top grim darkness and the bombastic lore.

The Ruinous Powers might be a bit too much for you, then. Or the Tyranid. The Sado-Eldar are perhaps even worse.

Some of the illustrations can also be a bit much. Case in point: This image from the old Codex Witch Hunters that is currently at the center of a heated debate at DakkaDakka:

All things considered, GW is slowly pushing the franchise out of XTREMEGRIMDARK into a more streamlined, family-friendly sci-fi territory (one needs only to compare the Primaris Marines with the 2nd/3rd Edi stuff), which I am sure has nothing to do with their ambitions to reach out to ever bigger demographics and other forms of media at all.

Plus there are kids books now...

To be honest even since towards the end rogue trooper there has been a general cleaning up of 40k imagery but they have generally been pretty good at keeping some stuff that shows more of the true horror and horribleness of the setting and occasionally some stuff gets revamped to bring the edge back. Compare ere we go/freebooterz/2nd edt orks who were mostly just a fun army of amusing green cartoon insanity to the much harsher and cruel post 3rd edt feel.

Better downplay Slaanesh, then. Other aspects of the WH40K universe might also not go well with helicopter parents.

I'd say so as well. Regarding Orks, there is also the 2015-2018 "The Beast Arises" book series which is hands down the darkest thing 40k has ever done on Orks...but it's from the Black Library. So it's avalaible to fans, but not immediately visible for broader potential audiences.

Better downplay Slaanesh, then. Other aspects of the WH40K universe might also not go well with helicopter parents.

They've been doing that for a while now. Compare and contrast Old vs New:

Daemonettes:
https://1d4chan.org/images/thumb/e/e3/D ... Models.jpg
https://1d4chan.org/images/2/28/Subtle_Daemonettes.jpg

Keeper of Secrets:
https://www.games-workshop.com/resource ... sNEW02.jpg
https://www.games-workshop.com/resource ... 360/01.jpg

Can't help but feel that Slaanesh Daemons are putting more and more clothes on.
In fact, when Age of Sigmar was launched, there were fears amongst the fanbase that Slaanesh had been removed from the setting completely (he gets captured and imprisoned in some pocket dimension by elf mages there) and that GW had similar plans for 40k which was why they were developing the Ynnari fluff.
Luckily, the latest Slaanesh release showed this to not be the case.

I'm not complaining. Slaanesh kind of gets pigeonholed as just a Chaos God of freaky sex. She's a god of pleasure and excess. There are other forms of it besides humping.

I don't really feel like GW is 'sanitizing' it's stuff at all.

Less plastic/metal/resin nipples does not necessarily mean it's being sanitized or made less 'mature' at all, just different aesthetic choices. Something like the new Repentia looks much better than the old ones to me - they look much more like actual repentants, rather than people clad in BDSM gear - and the new Keeper of Secrets, for example, looks far more elegant than the eight-boobed monster that was the old one.

Hell, just look at how with Age of Sigmar they made the 'main' Dark Elf faction not the ranks of armored elves with spikes, but scantily clad women on drugs drinking blood. First thing you see when you grab that book and open it is art of them fighting bare-chested Slaaneshi demons, and on the second it's more scantily clad elves drinking blood 'n drugs in full colour. If the amount of bare flesh on display in artwork is how you'd define 'maturity' and 'gritty' of a setting, AoS will definitely hit the mark, still - far more than WHFB ;)

I think that just summed up the experience of everyone who ever fell to Slaanesh ever.

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. Nope no good just various degrees of horrible. Even the few shining beacons of noble bright have some degree of darkness attached.

It's deliberate to make it easier for folks to get into armies other than the space marines who on the surface "the good guys".

What even is the state of the Necron and C'tan lore right now? I am quite unsure of what any of that is anymore.
