When did this become a meme?

I remember in fifth grade, a friend of mine memorized the song from start to finish, and sung it to our teacher for "auction dollars."

‘Twas the first song I knew of Animaniacs. Pretty much the only song I remember. Only thing I hated was how it considered regions as nations and missed out some of the countries that had existed back then.

And there are some countries that don't exist or have cease to exist
(Like Czechoslovakia which is now Czechia and Slovakia, and New Guinea which doesn't exist but it is a Island itself)

And in the new updated version I linked, the extra verse also includes former Yugoslav republics, like Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. And North Korea, Brunei, Eritrea! Ivory Coast, East Timor...

I'm more of a mid 2000s kids shows not the 90s. But the song is catchy and the Animaniacs seems entertaining for older generations.
