What are your music tastes?

Postby Ginicun » Sat Apr 27, 2019 10:34 pm

My music tastes are what follows
Hard rock, and some more calmer genres of rock. (I have a lot of people i like that are from the genre, including Frank Zappa, Swans, Pink Floyd, King Gizzard, Lighting Bolt, Henry Cow)
Some pop. if its creative. (Carly Rae Jepson (Not Call Me Maybe though), David bowie)
Edm (Same with rock)
Rap music (Same with rock and edm, but Milo, Busdriver, MF DOOM, Kanye west)
Some Avant-Garde music (Noise music, Tim Hecker, Plunderphonics, Negativland, even though they're not strictly avant-garde music, Ambient, etc.)
Jazz (John coltrane, Albert Ayler, Peter Brottzmann, Some bebop, the japanese style)
I have a open mind though, so i will listen to anything if its good.

The Ace Combat soundtrack. No, seriously, I only ever listen to songs from the Ace Combat series. Kobayashi-sama is a musical master.

Electronic, ambient, obscure stuff from obscure people.

Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, and Ceephax are a few of my favorite artists. I don't listen to much else, to be honest.

Don't mean to break rules here (is double-posting really that serious of an offense in the forums?) but this thread almost certainly belongs to the Arts and Fiction section or that place where there's this thread where you can post what you're listening to at the moment.

I'll listen to anything, assuming I like the way it sounds (especially with the instruments), but I generally prefer instrumental. If I had to select genres, it would be rock, metal (especially symphonic metal), heavy metal, electro, techno. If I had to select my least favorite genre: rap, I think. Something about it I don't like.

Pretty much everything. I tend to single out bands rather than genres. If i did have to say genre-wise, I'd go with various metal (mainly symphonic, alt & power-metal) indie pop and hard rock. And whatever this is supposed to be.

Like

certain big names in Japanese music - genre not specific,
classical,
instrumental (every once in a while),
communist national anthems (scientifically enticing),
and synthwave

are currently the big ones on my list. I have some friends who listen to rock, and I sometimes lean in with them, but otherwise I don't actively go out of my way to listen to rock music, especially not after my starting to think I didn't like these new songs from Linkin Park. Some vintage tracks that I bump into by accident are nice too.

My favourite genre would be new wave of the late 70s through mid 80s, in addition to the hard rock and early hair metal from 1982-1984, featuring earworms such as "Photograph", "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Turn Up the Radio". I like most mainstream pop and rock from about 1978 through 1990, with the exception of the schlocky, schmaltzy adult contemporary ballads. I also have a taste for psychedelic pop of 1965-1967, though the genre starts to lose me when it becomes less accessible, and while I like some 70s "classic" rock ("Blinded by the Light", "Carry On Wayward Son", and other classics from the time period), the genre as a whole falls victim to sounding the same and blatant self-indulgence. My taste extends into the 90s as well, with quite a few of the dance tunes from 1990-1997 serving as major guilty pleasures, and I do really like a lot of mainstream rock from 1994-2001, such as Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty, and others sometimes dismissed as "radio rock", though this is about where my tastes end. Popular music as a whole is not what it used to be, and most of the "classic" artists everyone loves are extremely overrated or burned out, so soon I'll probably have to start relying on my own music collection.

TL;DR: new wave, 80s pop and rock, 60s psychedelic, and 90s rock. Worst genres are hip-hop, bro-country, and that post-2000 adult contemporary.

Also, shouldn't this be in A&F?

Primarily a jazz guy. Within jazz my favorites are the avant guard styles, free etc. Lot's of Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Art Ensemble of Chicago, World Saxophone Quartet, late John Coltrane but also all John Coltrane. Also standard stuff like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Lester Young. Also a big fan of cool and third stream. Dave Brubeck (but mostly Paul Desmond), Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Gil Evans.

There are a handful of rock bands I like with a thread of connection if you're prone to finding those kinds of things. Pink Floyd, because every one needs an uncle to slide their nephew a copy of Dark Side of the Moon. Which is exactly what happened to me. In my time at the record store I got into Soul Coughing and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. I don't hate Tom Petty. A little bit into Blood Sweat and Tears. Always feel like I should be more into Frank Zappa. I'm sure there's more they're just not popping to mind right now.

Have a little love for ska. Mephiskapholes, Let's Go Bowling, NY Ska/Jazz Ensemble, Perfect Thyroid, Skankin' Pickle, etc.

Long love for Funk going back to my childhood. Funkadelic mostly. Sly and the Family Stone, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Gap Band. Some of the first albums I bought.

Love and training in classical. Mostly contemporary works, Kronos Quartet, Steven Reich, the Polish dude with the hard to remember name, starts with a G...Gorecki I think. John Cage.

Indigenous music I tend to like, it's interesting.

I like blues as well, mostly the battered guitar recorded into a cheap microphone Robert Johnson style Blind Willie Johnson. I like the slide sound as well. Mostly all the blues except when it's a white retired dude singing about how they're awesome. Blues has to be a bummer.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. Turbo Death Polka.

No, I'm primarily a rock guy. 90's and early 00's particularly. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Tragically Hip, LIVE, Neutral Milk Hotel, Our Lady Peace, Descendents, Less Than Jake. I like a lot of Kiwi rock I've found as well, Chris Knox & Don McGlashan in particular.

My "base" of music is what is typically considered classic rock, but I like many different kinds of music. Though there's a lot of different music I like, I tried to break it down by genre/scene but of course it's somewhat subjective and there may be overlaps.

Classic rock: The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival
Progressive: Pink Floyd, Harmonium, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Supertramp
Alternative: U2, R.E.M., Nirvana, Radiohead, The Cardigans, The White Stripes, No Doubt
New wave: Blondie, The Police
Punk: Stiff Little Fingers
Psychedelic: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Tame Impala, Melody's Echo Chamber, Shocking Blue
Indie: Middle Kids, Palmiyeler
Pop: ABBA, Bee Gees, The Beatles, Blondie, The Aces, HAIM
Reggae: Bob Marley, The Wailers
Heavy metal: Black Sabbath
Ska punk: No Doubt
Folk: Simon and Garfunkel
Country: Johnny Cash
Singer/songwriter: John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney
Anatolian rock: Barış Manço, Cem Karaca, Hardal, Erkin Koray, Moğollar
Gypsy jazz: Zaz
Blues: BB King
Rock and roll: Chuck Berry
Easy listening: Frank Sinatra
Classical: Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky
Soundtrack: John Williams

There are some genres that I'm more interested in delving into, like reggae, where I'd like to check out Culture and Burning Spear. I've barely scratched the surface on some of these genres/scenes.

Mostly older music in general, especially 70s and 80s (but also lot of 50s, 60s, and some 90s particularly from Japan). Lots of classic rock and old school heavy metal. Though I also.love disco and funk. I like at least something from every genre really!
