Bond. James Bond 007's New Ride: It's Electric

Postby US-SSR » Thu Mar 14, 2019 7:12 pm

Daniel Craig as Bond. James Bond 007 (one of the two best btw) will reportedly be driving...an electric car.

OK a quarter-million plus electric Aston Martin. And the car chase in the Citroen from For Your Eyes Only is still a classic. But electric? Really? Really? Bond needs to be driving something with a rich, gutteral, throaty, gas-engine growl, particularly when evading henchmen or passing Bond women on twisty mountain roads.

What else are they going to change to keep up with these dephlostigated times? Might we be seeing movies like:

Dr. No Carbon Footprint
From Russia with Her Explicit Consent
Goldcuddle
Thundersnuggle
You Only Live Once So Cut Down on the Cigarettes and Vodka Martinis
On Her Transgendered Majesty's Secret Service
Conflict-Free Diamonds Are Forever
Live and Let Diet
The Man with the Golden Gun Obtained Only after a Thorough Background Check and 30-Day Waiting Period
The Spy Who Affirmed My Personhood
There is No Planet B-raker
For Your Eyes Only: Catcalling is Unacceptable Harassment
Octo Gentle, Sensitive Male
Never Means Never Again
A View to a Kale
The Living Daylight Savings Time
Licence to Krill
My GoldenEyes Are Up Here
Tomorrow Never Cries but Men Who Are Secure in Their Masculinity Do
Saving the World for Future Generations Is Not Enough
Diane Feinstein Day
Play Money Casino Royale
Quantum of Mindfulness
Prevent Skyfalls, Wear Sensible Shoes

Yikes.

Yikes indeed.

This is as outrageous as if they decided that Batman should support increased immigration policies to the USA or Superman should oppose nuclear power.

Its neither here nor there (not necessarily contradicted by lore) but its an entirely apropos of nothing insertion.

Electric cars aren't so bad, it can be done well. I'd expect that over time, it'd get even better depending on how good battery technology becomes. It has its limitations but then again, so do regular cars. It's a real pain to have to pour money and time into regular maintenance of an engine like is the case with almost all cars. The problem right now though, is that most people can only afford fossil fuel cars and the infrastructure isn't there to support electric just yet.

Renewable energy shouldn't be partisan strictly speaking, lots of conservatives would want to take advantage of solar as well; if solar panels became cheap enough and where they live is sunny enough to really benefit from it.

Why is this such a big deal? I wouldn't care about what car James Bond uses, even if he uses a Reliant Robin or one of these beauties.

James Bond NEEDS to be a prick. And a bit of a classist one too.

That's like... his whole character.

Electric cars is too hip, progressive, and friendly. It doesn't suit him.

No he needs to be The Gentleman (in that he's an arrogant personification of a bygone era of British imperialism and class superiority, and of course he went to Oxford). That's always been the character. And such a character would stick to wealthy status symbols in his cars.

If being the most faithful to the James Bond novels, he'd be depicted in a Cold War setting strictly speaking. He is a Cold War relic as a literary character. The movement towards supervillians and made up or fantastical plots is mainly just a Hollywood thing to continue more movies and thus make more money from a known brand.

In real life, Mossad is more known for actual assassinations and cloak and dagger operations. MI6 perhaps hasn't pulled off any notable operations in quite a long while. Not since the World War 2 days, being that this was around the time the British empire collapsed.

As someone who almost watches the Bond movies solely for the cars, I am not particularly bothered by this.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Eh?

Someone actually watches Bond for the car?

I've heard of people who only watch Bond for the women (sounds like a bad reason) but only for the cars is a first.

Interesting.

Responding in a thread where the choice of Bond cars has made the news, somehow shocked that someone likes the cars...

No, I get that the cars can be part of the appeal of the series/character but I've just never heard of it being the main or only reason for watching.

but then again, maybe its because I am pretty disinterested in cars myself

The character whose signature weapon is a tiny little silenced pistol, whose primary skills are subterfuge and deception, must of course drive LOUD CAR. BIG LOUD CAR, VROOM VROOM.

Bruce Wayne is a noted philanthropist. Superman unilaterally confiscated all the world's nuclear weapons and threw them into the sun.

Bond doesn't choose his car, it's issued to him. Or sometimes he steals whatever Q branch happens to be working on.

"Actually" Ian Fleming came up with the idea for the Special Executive for Counterespionage, Terror, Revenge and Extortion (SPECTRE) and its cast of supervillains because he was unaccountably convinced the Soviets were about to lose the Cold War, leaving him without any bad guys for his hero to defeat. Oh and Bond. James Bond fictionally attended Fettes College in Scotland and the University of Geneva, where he learned to ski mostly, after being sent down from Eton. He favored a Beretta 418 before being issued his service-standard Walther PPK, which had more stopping power and was less likely to jam. Of course being the kind of guy he is he can pretty much pick up any weapon, ranged or edged, and use it, climb in the cockpit of a jet fighter, attack helicopter, hydrofoil and, soon, electric car and fly/navigate/drive it, etc.

I need to see this car and judge it for myself if it's a cool Bond car or uncool. Even though it is electric it's an Aston Martin, how bad could it be? (I am kicking myself before someone even shows me what it looks like)

Oh and BTW Goldeneye is the best 007 movie, and Brosnen is the best Bond, don't @ me.

Only because Sean Bean/Eddard Stark is in it

(James grabs 006 before he falls)

006: “For England James?”

James: “... No. For Me.”

(Drops 006 to his death)

You forgot Alan Cumming, Famke Janssen, Izabella Scorupco, Samantha Bond, Judi Dench, Gottfried John, Joe Don Baker, Robbie Coltrane, Hell pretty much the entire cast is sheer perfect. The only complaint about the movie I have is we never get to see the Z3 in action, but the tank chase was pretty damn epic.

006 vs 007 is one of the most best, most visceral hand to hand fights of all time in the Bond series, Bond came very close to losing because "Eddard" was also a trained operative of the MI6.

The setting on a massive flying platform/station was also perfect

It was fantastic for its time, but has aged quite poorly. AI was so crap in those days that I don't recall there being many people who didn't shoot Natalya on purpose on at least a few occasions. She was the quintessential example of a worthless sidekick burden who gets in the way and causes the player to fail levels by getting herself killed by running right into gunfire and explosions. The high light was the 4 screen multiplayer. Ah, good times.

Best Bonds imo:

  1. Connery
  2. Craig, with a bullet
  3. George Lazenby's original take on the role in the underrated OHMSS
  4. Brosnen

all four of these very close, followed at some distance by all the rest.

don't really have favorite Bond films. some favorite moments:

  • the end of Casino Royale (of course not the silly one): "Bond. James Bond." DA DA daaaa DA DA daaa DA DA DA DAT-DA! that always gets cut out on network when they run the credits too fast
  • the car chase goof, Mr. Wint's "snuggie - ooooOOOOHH!" and Bambi and Thumper in Diamonds are Forever
  • Desmond Llewelyn's star turn in Licence to Kill
  • tank vs. car chase in GoldenEye
  • Citroen car chase and Topol's bits in For Your Eyes Only
  • Patsy from Ab Fab in OHMSS
  • Ursula Andress in Dr. No
  • Best line ever from Goldfinger: "Do you expect me to talk?" "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to DIE!"
