Eurovision Song Contest 2019

Postby Darkmania » Wed Feb 27, 2019 10:20 am

"The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 will be the 64th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The contest is scheduled to take place in Tel Aviv, Israel, following Israel's victory at the 2018 contest in Lisbon, Portugal with the song "Toy", performed by Netta. The contest will be held at Expo Tel Aviv, the city's convention centre; the show will consist of two semi-finals on 14 and 16 May, and the final on 18 May 2019." (Saurce: Wikipedia)

This is the tread for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in everyone's favourite place, Israel, after Netta won with "Toy". All the gossip, the news, and the reactions and the salt after "the wrong song won". After all, what is it to love the world biggest song contest with billions of viewers like you and me?

This is where a studio version, if I can find one, of the Eurovision songs will be listed. Ill only link the songs when its officially realised, NOT leaked! Note that i will include the titles of the songs. I don't link the dates for the NF because i guess you know them anyway.

Oh dear! Here we go again- Though I'd like a return to the old style of scoring as all the angst of waiting for the odd crumb of comfort or the dangling fruit of the high scores as been sterilised. The screwed up tv schedules were fun too- apologies and the revised schedule flashing on the bottom of the screen.

disappointed that the Albanian entry isn't about dope smoking- though what else was I meant to think with tokes being in the title.

Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-47394371

Apparently, Ukraine had been forced to quit because the public broadcaster (UA:PBC) had tried to force the top three artists to sign a restrictive contract, which (if I recall correctly) included a ban on performing in Russia and the requirement for the artist to pay for all the expenses.

No wonder Volodymyr Zelensky, a TV star, is leading in the Ukrainian polls with his big tent, syncretic political party, Servant of the People, since the current government does not get the idea that the arts should not always be political.

And don’t get me started on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seems to oppose absolutely everything that involves Israel. Eurovision has nothing to do with the political and human rights situation in the country, although I do agree that the human rights situation needs to be resolved.

However, boycotting Eurovision, which is taking place in Tel Aviv and not a West Bank settlement, will do nothing to change that, and I feel the protests are making the BDS movement look worse — bearing in mind that Benjamin Netanyahu is already facing huge trouble over the corruption scandals. The actions of the BDS is why I take no sides in the Israel-Palestine disputes.

In short, I am getting tired of Eurovision being politicised.

Even with just the televote, Kate Miller-Heidke’s Zero Gravity would still win with 87 points, versus the 70 points for Electric Fields.

Why is something called 'Eurovision' being hosted outside of Europe?

I ask that same question about the Asian Cup. Middle Eastern nations are allowed to participate even though the Middle East is not considered part of Asia by most people)

The scope for participation is for whether countries fall in the European Broadcasting Area. The broadcasting area includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Algeria, etc. Morocco has once participated in Eurovision

I liked Electric Fields, but I prefer Kate a lot more, I liked the staging too. Shame they're going to change it.

Eurovision, I hope, will get less political when a less worrisome nation hosts. Portugal is in between Ukraine and Israel, so they don't technically count right now haha.

never knew Morocco once competed- I'll have to give it a listen. About that time African music was becoming more of an influence in western music what with gabriel, paul simon and womad being around that time.

yeah ok- it was already was entrenched in francophile countries

Not to put on my history hat here but the socio-cultural definition of "Europe" has always been in flux.
That said, geographically of course Israel, Morocco, Armenia, Georgia, Australia and Azerbaijan are not in Europe but most of them fall within the EBZ as mentioned before. Special cases were made for Armenia and Azerbaijan as they were once part of a European country/empire and this have a strong historical and cultural connection, and yes Australia threw lots of money and roses at the EBU's feet for decades.

It's pretty tiring to keep hearing people who don't care or know anything about the contest keep making snide comments about Israel not being in Europe despite the fact that they've been participating since 1973, have won 3 times before 2018 and have hosted twice before.

Those "oh I didn't know Israel was in Europe haha" comments just expose that person as not knowing anything about the contest or its history.

Australia has aired Eurovision since 1983 and the love of Eurovision "down under"was one of the reasons SBS began taking part in Eurovision as a celebration for the 60th anniversary in 2015.

must say - listening down semi final 2, austria to switzerland on youlist, it wasn't like anything like I was expecting. Seems to be a lot more more slow acoustic type numbers than the usual fare of 'beat and belter' stuff. Almost melancholy - interesting in itself.

tried listening to the first one - just got the taster- it's meant to be out today.

being a glutton for punishment I listened to the rest of that semi abit more up tempo- bookended by strong songs from albania and russia.

How many can they have on stage Norway- or are you hoping that 'just off stage' doesn't count?

In the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix, there are as I know it, no limit on how many can be on the stage at once, while to recap, there is a 6 person limit at Eurovision.

As a Norwegian myself, I think that NMPG should use Eurovision`s 6 person limit, but I'm not NRK.

Do you think the Croatian's are keeping something under wraps until the finals? It just screams going for the 'wow' factor to get the audience reaction.

As far as Norge goes - they'll probably make full use of the projections to achieve a similar effect.

This is not joke, I legitimately just hope San Marino just continues to alternate between sending those absolute legends Serhat and Valentina Monetta.

I think san marino should qualify.

whatever is going on with the portuguese entry I don't know- but I started watching it and thought that's different- and it was very interesting indeed.

but i recommend you watch this live version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8jSDAMO1f0

if you thought it was interesting before this one will whet your appetite for the semi- i think it'll blow the roof of the stadium.

I absolutely love Iceland's song. Hopefully they keep the protest-y parts more subtle so they don't get disqualified...

Realistically, the UK may flop badly because of the Brexit, which is best discussed in NSG: however, I no longer visit NSG for health reasons.

I think the polarisation of politics has gone far enough, but I feel that the Brexit will overshadow the UK’s entry whether I like it or not.

I feel like the UK entry is intentionally evoking Brexit. Or at least, it's got a bit of Brexit-y subtext. Then again I think almost any UK entry could be read as having Brexit subtext now...

The UK could've sent any song with any title and it could've been linked to Brexit, I think it's being overthought.

Like in the NF, you might as well argue that "Sweet Lies" was about the sweet lies of the EU scaremongering or the "Sweet Lies" of how easy it would be to leave the EU. "Freaks" could just link back to the EU from the British perspective.

Russia has a much worse reputation and yet they still do very well. Brexit doesn't have an impact on the music industry of Britain in other countries, or the film industry etc, I don't see why it would be an issue here.

This year, the song is better than last year - I like it - but I think Sweden does it better.

There possibly ought to be a viewers advisory statement - children and those of a nervous disposition might possibly prefer not to see the polish entry. ould be from a horror movie - 4 Matryoshka dolls standing there with eerie otherworldly vocals and a sinister intent - shivers nervously- loved it: like it's a pastiche of the Ukraine milking grandma's revenge.

There is also pure eurovision staging from the Aussies - could be some strange mangling mishap happen as her 'dancer/acrobat' flounces about.
