For the 1970's, I was thinking of getting a copy of Carole King's Tapestry and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. I only know the number-one singles that these albums produced though. Also, have you sampled some Rod Stewart or Elton John tracks (if you're into pop that is)?

I mean there is a lot of music from those decades, and really other than the most popular and obvious choices that still stick in the public conscience to this day, I don't think I can do the 60s and 70s much justice. Well I actually I can say one thing and that is disco is overhated as fuck after 1979 and should really be re-evaluated.

Lots of factors contributed to disco's decline, but it is still influential. Easy to say it was overhated, but try asking a person who was into music in the 1970's why it was so.
Some well-known disco or disco-influenced tracks that OP might want to consider:
  • Heart of Glass by Blondie
  • Bad Girls, MacArthur Park by Donna Summer
  • Good Times, Everybody Dance by Chic
  • We Are Family by Sister Sledge
  • Love Hangover by Diana Ross
  • Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees
  • You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester
  • Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You by Teri DeSario
  • Fly, Robin, Fly by Silver Convention

Litterally everybody took the songs that I wanted to say :(

Wait, Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and pretty much any song by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Surprised only one person mentioned goddamn fuckin' Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Ronnie James Goddamn Dio.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z03ZRYh4GKY

They speak for themselves. They're revered as rock gods for a reason.

Here's a weird one: Saga, 1979 and 1980

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdf1eLW87qg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYt7dWb2knc

Bizarre obscure progressive rock band from Canada. My favorite part about them is whoever does their art. It matches the music, which is to say it's easily 10 years ahead of it's time. This is the kinda music you expect near the end of the 80's or even the 90's, not the tail end of the 70's. Industrial, spacey, heavy synth, with dramatic sci-fi imagery.

Also, seriously, y'all aren't gonna mention some 60's funk and soul.

The Temptations

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDakhsaPTE0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9poCAuYT-s

Soul groups tended to shift between party tunes and political rhetoric, and they knew how to do it right.

Motherfuggin' Sam & Dave

I'M A SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUL MAN

Amii Stewart

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKuJUxGntRI

Martha and the Vandellas

The Marvelettes

Carry on with The Doors, man! Some good shit there.

Also anything by The Beatles ('65 onwards), The Rolling Stones ('68 - '72) and The Kinks ('66 - '69). I won't be a hypocrite and recommend Led Zeppelin because, honestly, I dislike them a lot.

1960s, pull up any and all CREAM albums. Fresh Cream, Disraeli Gears, Wheels of Fire. You’ll fall in love with Eric Clapton’s subtlety, Ginger Baker on the kit, and Jack Bruce’s vocals. I hate to keep fanboying for CREAM but I love them so much and I really feel like they’re completely underrated as a great sixties band.
