So then is this horror story “cannon” or is it just a nightmare 1 shot/alternate reality?

Is this really the permanent fate of the poor character?

No, it's canonical, but in the timeline he gets found a day later & the incident resulted in him becoming even more clingy. He begins to prioritize not being alone over his own safety, although since this is the Shwe world it's still likely for the usual evil spirit causing everything to disappear briefly. Chances are that even a brief second of that would cause him to grow even more jumpy.

He was actually pretty close to discovering his origin since the Boiler Room & the Stringing Hall where he was made are physically & resource-wise connected, but since he's the only person insofar discovered to be immune to the Boiler Room's anxiety-inducing aura it doesn't look like he'll ever find out.

Say Scarra, do you yourself like to write horror?
Hm... I'm not quite familiar with Scottish Highlands horror. As for Japanese horror, I've seen the original The Ring. :p

Also, I love to write horror.

For instance, “story must be set in, or in some way connected to (in at least one significant plot point) to Japan or Japanese culture”

I mean there’s a massive range of potential stories since it’s still very broad but there will be a very different flavor :)

But I like the flash horror idea too (could be easier to judge)

I don't consider a lot of my writing really horror, but I do find delight in creating creatures &/or people with horrifying designs or abilities, such as the Larval Magician or the Basajuan featured in Benjamin Gallo's memoir. The concept of losing one's control is also one of the most prominent horror tropes in Shwe's universe, too. Two characters can possess people slowly, with one such incident resulting in the discovery of the Containment Bay, which also has a bunch of other mind-controlling substances inside of it that have since consumed the lab. There's also a wide variety of curses, diseases, eldritch/delusional beings, & other such abominations to ruin a person's sense of control.
