Only Assassin's Creed game I ever played was Black Flag, and I really liked it since I could be a pirate.

I need more pirate games.

How interesting are the main characters? I feel like Bayek, Aya, and the Frye twins were steps down in terms of writing.

Is the combat just like Origins?

How much Greek mythology is in it? The older games were largely about history, and the weirder stuff mainly tied into conspiracies rather than fantasy. Other than the First Civilization, which is an important part of the plot, there wasn't really any supernatural stuff in the games save for maybe when Shay Cormac fights the Headless Horseman in Rogue. Origins suddenly turned into a fantasy game with Egyptian mythology as a justification. I remember that ridiculous Final Fantasy crossover, Bayek's ability to control a bird, and that antagonist lady who could tame hyenas as more extreme examples of what I'm talking about. How much weird fantasy is in Odyssey's plot, and is it Greek mythology stuff or is it just First Civilization stuff. Does the main character have some weird superpower besides eagle vision?

I'd argue both, I guess? It's kind of like the formula that the franchise has had, the first game is well-received as a good baseline experience, a prototype, if you will (AC2, AC3,) and then the next game just builds off of that to make a perfection of that design (Brotherhood, Black Flag). And after that is the game that just sticks around to have more fun with that perfection (Revelations, Rogue), but that's not really relevant because we're not there yet for the current design. Odyssey really does seem to make notably bigger differences than Brotherhood and Black Flag did, even if the core elements are the same.

Combat is EXACTLY like Origins, but there is more to do in combat. It's different enough that I certainly have fun with it, but that's certainly my own value judgement, ymmv. I can answer your final question here, the powers you have for combat and stealth can be bonkers and are supposedly because you have a precursor artifact serving as your assassination blade right from the start of the game. I can't say how far they go with the fantastical elements, after all, l haven't left Tutorial Island yet. :p. I will bet that it's just as much, if not more than Origins, though, considering the promotional stuff I've seen.

And as for the writing, I'm loving it. And so are a LOT of people, reviewers are praising the game as its greatest strength. And I have to admit, I'm kinda with you in regards to Bayek and Aya, I felt that the main story of Origins was its weakest point. I did overall like Bayek as a character, though, I just thought he shined best in side missions.

Hmm. I really didn't care for Origins combat, and I'm not looking forward to that being the basis of the series for the next few games, but everything else sounds good.

Hmm.

I dunno any newer ones, but there's Monkey Island and Sid Meier's.

And by the way, Ubi "animating female characters is too hard" soft has totally nailed Kassandra, so i'm happy.

2 -3 hours of pure exploration and viewpointing amounted to revealing about 70% of the Peloponnesian peninsula and that percentage probably amounts to somewhere between 20 - 30% of all the landmass in the game. God-damn, this map is titanic. Worth every second, this game is beyond beautiful.

It was probably difficult to balance an innovative concept like open world back then, and they probably could have done more for the DOS version in '93 and the newer one on Steam from whenever, but I think it's great, personally. One of Microprose's best, I'd say, up there with Civilization and X-COM/UFO for me.

The war situation in Greece has turned very strange. With the exception of a few islands and the capital cities on both sides, literally all of the territory in the north of the map is held by Sparta and everything in the south is held by Athens. I didn't even fully realize that there was conquest going on as a background function until I had seen how decisively the map had changed. This system is very peculiar.

Should it not the other way around? From the screenshots ive seen of the Map its near all of Greece (obviously not to scale) and Athens is to the north east of Sparta geographically.

I guess an easier way to say it is that everything adjacent to and north of Athens is loyal to the Spartans, while everything on the Peloponnesian peninsula that isn't the Spartan capital is loyal to Athens. With the exception of the Macedonian region, it's like the war has been flipped compared to the historic scenario.

They are part of Skybound entertainment which is owned by Robert Kirkman (the creator of walking dead comic).

It was created this year and has been a publishing division only so far, so this would be their first game they would actually develop (well partially develop), and apparently they are going to try and get the same dev team from telltale to continue on with them.
